It is beginning to look like a streamer over me now according to radar. Line running from Blackpool to Manchester.

That's pretty accurate. Assuming every snowflake that lands sticks and doesn't melt for 24 hours.

In what respect, exaclty?

Better ridging in the Atlantic, nice northerly by sat then a further attempt to at ridging into Greenland. It doesn't quite make it again but getting better, Winter proper may finally arrive soon.

Edit, actually maybe it does! It's trying it's hardest.

It looks like there are more showers incomming on the radar, that little band I photo'd earlier dropped a covering on all ungritted surfaces (and started to on the main road in front of my house which connects the East lancs to the M6 so the gritters have been hitting it a lot tonight) It's interesting that the showers are moving through quickly as there isn't a breath of wind imby at surface level. It fell as all snow here and we're not exactly a million miles inland and don't have a great deal of elevation. I'm going to have to stay awake a bit longer to see if these incomming showers amount to anything at all but I think it's safe to say it's going to be proper icy out there in the morning.

Very icy outside - everything has a wet icy coating, and its murky and misty, with the odd snowflake whirling around. Tomorrow morning will be very treacherous, with ice very slow to clear, indeed it won't in sheltered spots after a long cold night and weak January sun. At last it feels like winter!

Consistent model upgrades these past few days. No narnia yet, but at this rate could be by early next week. Late Jan/Early Feb is still early enough for a proper cold spell.

Basically as stated above Northerly followed by poss. Greenland high (didn't make it this run).

Yes in an average year, late January - early February is the coldest period of the year. Also easterlies and northerlies are far more likely in February than December and January, as the atlantic traditionally quietens. The arctic is also still cooling along with SST's.

The saying 'as the days lengthen the cold strengthens' - certainly holds true.

Easterlies and northerlies still pack a very cold punch well into March as well - when they are more likely to surface.
