I noticed that the flow that follows the front is not a very windy one. When we had these flows in recent years, I've noticed the very windy ones seem to bring little in the way of wintry preciptation to lower levels. Was it last winter, where we had that really windy NWly blast, felt windier than forecast and most people missed out on anything wintry?

This is a massive point; something I was going to comment on later. The slack flow here will increase chances to lower levels and also increase the lightning likelihood. It also allows evaporative cooling to have a greater affect under any intense streamers/troughs.

Wouldn't be surprised to see falling snow even here but would be shocked to see settling snow, can't imagine there'll be much ppn here despite what the euro4 ppn charts show.

I'm not sure how an Ice Warning for Northern Ireland and a snow warning for high ground in Scotland is much use to us?

The warnings cover 2 days, select Tuesday.

Latest update from MWIS:

PLANNING OUTLOOK

All mountain areas of Britain from Tuesday 22nd January 2019

The colder conditions will continue across the mountains over the next week or fortnight - perhaps longer. Mountain temperatures will frequently be sub-freezing, often to lower slopes in Scotland, although from Thursday to Sunday this week, there will be cycles of freeze and thaw Scottish Highlands, whilst elsewhere, summit temperatures will most often be above freezing point. Precipitation wise, there will be further snow, albeit some melting periods later this week. Next week, there may well be extensive fresh snowfall, substantial in some areas.

Patience.....

Wow just looked again and the flow is even more slack than I thought. Surface winds remain below 20 mph throughout Tuesday, steadily dropping away. By early hours of Wednesday they become light and variable.

Looking at the steering winds: they remain below 40 mph throughout, dropping to near 20 mph by late Tuesday. They steadily veer from w to N by Wednesday lunchtime. Chowers will be slower moving than you would usually expect, and cells will have a greater time to develop over the warm waters.

Presumably good; as in keeping the showers around for longer?

Met office removed the snow warning, all ice now.

If Euro 4 is of any worth they will sure upgrade any warnings to inc snow..

The steering winds do that, see my other post. The light surface winds stop the sea air from going that far inland and enhance evaporative cooling effects.

Latest Euro 4 shows less precipitation around, mid afternoon onwards on Tuesday, unless I am reading it wrong? Could it be that there will be a lull in activity tomorrow afternoon, hence why warning only extends to midday?
