Yes wasn't in the slightest bit hopefully of any snow on Saturday but the amber warning for ice/freezing rain could be tricky for those trans pennine routes on Saturday afternoon.

Big upgrade now on 06Z WRF. It keeps that sub 0 layer all afternoon at 950/925 mb which is very interesting. Beginning to think snow will quickly transition to ice pellits/freezing rain at all levels though so make the most of any snow you see initially.

Just checked the WRF for Buxton. Wow it looks bad there. Freezing at all levels between 4000 feet and surface all day and a massive inversion above that.

Still think ice pellets will be the main form of precipitation until later.

Going to New Mills at 10am tomorrow. A624 Chunal hill is the route via Glossop.

I'm hoping to be back home by 11.15, just about missing the start.

Good luck. Keep us updated on conditions there if you can.

Even on the Solway coast the frost has been thick on the grass all day - wonder what tomorrow might bring in the north Lake District !!??

Going on a Christmas pub crawl around Glossop/old Glossop tomorrow evening....should be fun in any snow/freezing rain/ice but I’m thinking we might be included in the Manchester rain shadow whilst the snake/Woodhead are closed with ice and 20cm snow...

The big question for me is: how much leeway above 0°C in the inversion do we get before local evaporative cooling stops being effective at preventing melting. In other words, will the dew-point At say 850 mb have an effect on proceedings. In theory you could have snow surviving through the inversion even passing through  temperatures a few degrees above freezing, just as you could at the surface.

Not if it’s going to be the freezing type anyway.

i’ll put up with the wet and cold stuff so long as I can jump in the car and drive on something better than an ice rink but tomorrow has the potential to be pretty severe, especially given that it will be one of the busiest shopping and party days of the year.

Not posted for a while for one reason or another. Anyway, looks like some interesting weather inbound. For areas East of Manchester, I think it will be more of a case of how much precipitation falls rather than type of precipitation. Strong South Easterly flow equals major rain shadow effect here. Could end up with very little precipitation.

Will be at the Band room on Derby street tomorrow evening for the CONNECT xmas party. Could we get power cuts if the ice is bad enough?
