End total was 16 million square kilometers with the 5th highest total of the 10 years plotted and clearly close to the mean.

The gradient however was the 4th highest and only beaten by 2009, 2015 and 2016 (two of which saw a -AO Jan-Feb period).

That would make sense as October 2012 had a cold finish, too.

Sorry. I think there has been snow there. I went looking for a report and picked up an old one. I blame it on too many kids distracting me. If you don't think that's a valid excuse, I'll lend them to you!

This might make up for it, though it's just one to watch develop (and remembering I have family in Texas). There is a snowstorm at 10-11 days that currently indicates up to 2 feet of snow around northern Texas, Oklahama and Kansas sort of area. That would be quite something, beating annual totals in one event, if it comes out anything like that.

And within minutes of posting it - it's updated and completely gone for that area! Oh well, it still looks like the snow line is going to make some advances across the US in the next couple of weeks with snow extending briefly into some southern states.

That section northern Russia closed in less than a day....I suspect it wasn’t open water as the picture suggests.  Canada has been ice bound for ages....this looks pretty impressive Catch-up

It will be interesting to see what happens with this fast refreeze now that the Laptev and East Siberian Seas have frozen over.
Hudson Bay and the Kara seas probably offering the most potential for maintaining this refreeze momentum over the next week.

We can see how much of the refreeze has been in the Laptev sea the last few days. Not much free space remaining now so to maintain the refreeze at the 100k+/day rate, other seas now need to pick up the slack.

I think Kara sea has decent potential for fast refreeze but after that any advance westwards is likely to be slow.

After averaging an increase of over 160k/day over the last 6 days, the JAXA sea ice extent increase for yesterday was just 47k

BFTV..

Was just about to show why we have caught up on the average for the 2010's, so quickly, when your latest post shows a drop in rates of growth today.

The following is from Maisie -

https://nsidc.org/data/masie/masie_plots

The detail of the following plots can be observed -

Plot R3  (ESS), Plot R4 (Laptev), Plot R5 (Chukchi), Plot R8 (Baffin), and Plot R10 (Hudson Bay)

The following have failed to display, but can be observed in the link above.

Refer to the above plots, to see how the areas have frozen over the last 3 weeks.

ESS and Laptev are now just about full, but Baffin and Kara look to be ready to refreeze, and with the current and forecast conditions in Canada we could see Hudson following suite.

The Hudson refreeze is looking quite early this year.

Of possible relevance is that Chukchi has declined somewhat today, particularly as Bering started to freeze yesterday for probably  the first time this year.

An interesting and very fast refreeze is taking place.

The following is from ASIF showing the extent gains in context.

index.php?action=dlattach;topic=2223.0;a

I am not sure why it will copy in from ASIF, but not from Maisie. Looks like some block, associated with the new formatting rules, in the forum, since they can be viewed quite happily on my screen..

I have tried to fix it now BFTV.    You will have to use the link I have now added.

I will now go back (if I can still edit), to improve the post.

Edit - I've now updated my previous post.

Winter is starting to push down into the central plains of Canada and the USA. Snow expected in parts of North Dakota and some already showing on the attached webcam for those who like a snow fix......

The heavy snow forecast for Texas/Oklahoma/Nebraska that vanished as soon as I posted last weekend has returned as a modest fall to come in a few days so North America has not quite yet given up on the trend for early winter weather for many places. This weekend looks set to see all the rest of Canada covered, give or take the odd Moose.

Another small sea ice extent gain yesterday, just 27k. Looks like some gains in the Kara sea being cancelled out by losses in the Chukchi.
How long will the slow down continue? I suspect not very long. Plenty of cold air over the Kara sea until the weekend and Hudson Bay should see below average temps from tomorrow on.
