Why does a warning always come up when I click on the image above?

Seems to be some sort of security issue with that sight!

Snow on high ground 10 US states and Canada around 50% covered? Not bad for Early October!

The snow is not where it should be or at least normally is, very unusual, here is the Rutgers snow lab anomaly chart -

https://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/chart_daily.php?ui_year=2018&ui_day=280&ui_set=2

Just to add to the Wrangel Island data earlier, the first six days of October all beat the previous October record of 5.3°C, and a new max of 9.3°C.

Take another part of Siberia much further west, at 69°N the world's northernmost city of Norilsk, famed from photos of buildings buried in drifting snow from miles of tundra. The average October temperatures are min -12.5°C max -6.7°C with a record of 9.6°C - yesterday saw a new October record of 16.1°C.

Interitus - where are you getting Wrangel Island Data from, please? I can only find data from 2005 and I've seen a couple of articles suggesting there was no automated weather station installed on the island before that.

Gavin Partridge said it is due to them updating their site and it is safe to enter.  My Firefox gave me a warning but I proceeded without any problems.

No automated station maybe, but weather recordings have been taken since the 1920s when the Russians finally claimed the island.

The September temperatures were calculated from the SYNOP data on ogimet - eg http://www.ogimet.com/cgi-bin/gsynres?lang=en&ind=21982&ano=2018&mes=10&day=8&hora=6&min=0&ndays=50

An interesting place, last outpost of the woolly mammoth, the accounts of early explorers trapped by ice for 3 years in the 1920s is a far cry from the annual open water today.

Current snow levels are less than some years - but not especially unusual. Run the link that interitus has given: there are other years with more red. In essence the loss of so much sea ice is going to make early autumn mild because it takes that much longer to regain ice coverage. Temperatures will be higher. Does this impact on the depth of cold in Dec/Jan/Feb? Good question. Data for midwinter would be interesting.

For a clearer European Snow Cover View I found this one which pulls it's data from IMS @ NOAA, it does however appear to be updating 1 day behind the usual NHemisphere map but is still quite nice

Thanks, Interitus. It does look an interesting place. Wrangel Island is supposedly the most biodiverse island in the Arctic.

Weird weather in the US. Snow on the higher ground now in 14 US states (poss more next week) and a near hurricane headed for the Gulf coast at the same time.

Euro looks better for Siberia over the next ten days so i am not too worried although it keeps Alaska largely warm.

The theme of cold air pouring into eastern Canada however looks if anything to pick up.

Meteo's forecast - or as Interitus tells me, actually the NWP model it sources from - indicates snow for the western 1/3rd of the UK all the way down to Cornwall on 28th of October. Now, we know this will change but it's something to watch for. Cue end of the world headlines in the usual papers! Even if it does not turn up, we keep getting hints of possible early snow.

Snowcover across North America is officially running at a record pace.

Snowcover across Eurasia is the lowest since at least 2008 in terms of extent.

Snowcover advance (the more important theoretical index) is running fairly low but in line with 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017.

In terms of the pattern to come, the pattern is more faviourable over western and southern Eurasia in 5-10 days albeit we won't be building south in eastern Siberia.

Snow and freezing drizzle in NW Texas. Windchill 8F in Boise Texas. It's mid-October!

My sister is in central Texas and says it was 80F today and the high for tomorrow is predicted at 40F - and I thought our 12-13C drop since yesterday was bad!

That's 22C drop from 26C to 4C...

Colorado had its earliest snowfall and coldest October 14th on record.  Mile High Stadium had to be cleared of snow before the Broncos game.

Temps back up to 18 degrees by the end of the week.
