Quite a lively thunderstorm just passed through here near Croydon in south London, thunder and lightning getting more frequent as it pulls away east, this the scene to the west before it arrived

Was a surprise to see a storm pass directly over me for a change, was some very strong winds in the core with poplar tree in our back garden getting bent horizontal in top half at one point, the lightning really ramped up as it clears, was videoing it so hopefully will get some stills of lightning in a bit.

I thought it maybe a long shot forecasting earlier today a storm risk in the southeast today, paid off though

Kudos to you Nick - definitely paid off. She’s going a bit quieter now but I can hardly say I’m surprised. Giving the occasional flash and grumble still though!

It’s great - it’s like Mother Nature is very successfully distracting us from the fact there have been no thunderstorms here all summer with a cheap parlour trick... don’t fall for it - it’s all smoke and mirrors!!!

Just a couple of flashes and rumbles and more heavy rain. Garden's across the country rejoice.

Saw a few flashes in the distance earlier. Very unexpected.

N Germany saw the real action today though with a big bow echo raging through, now a MCS has exploded in the Balearic sea. Majorca or Barcelona cams may well pick that one up now.

Just going through photos from Essex the other week and something struck me - it’ll be a while before we get scenes like this again - the yellow grass against the deep dark grey/blue skies - amazing to see:

Edit: ok it might have been wheat here - but in other pics it was defo yellow grass

Keep a lookout over the mountains if you can there to the NW. It’s gone into overdrive there very quickly! Looks to be heading slowly E. I got treated to a very spectacular show around 2 years ago looking out towards Menorca

I saw the potential myself but wasn't sure and only an area in the southwest mainly in the channel but steering winds heading northeast which could move towards the London area but decided not to mention it in case I was wrong. Perhaps looking at more forecast models as well as GFS may have shown a little more for me to have gone on.

Happy to see people getting a surprise storm this evening.

ECMWF highlight CAPE across SE England quite well this evening on the 00z run, a few 100 j/kg at least, though appreciate not everyone has access

Really odd.

I was expecting the transition from yesterdays hot to todays "autumnal" weather to be the real killer storm. It was relatively cold today so interesting what was feeding the storm. I presume it just brought its energy with it. Where was the heat?!

No problem at all. Just odd that it wasn't a hot day and certainly wasn't expecting it. I'd missed the cloud formations you'd photographed, which i presumed were a bit earlier this evening?
