hi guys, Stockton on tees resident here.

what an absolute corker of a storm we have going on, constant strobing lightning, long rolling booming thunder and an almost green sky.

had a couple of close strikes as well, my cat is just like zero hoots given....sleeping through the lot.

Im in Eston near the Boro....ICI has been struck 3 times !!

Best storm Ive ever seen ....at one stage I had family in the hall because it was that bad my daughter started crying !

The initial wind gusts even had me wondering if we were going to get a funnel cloud .

That lightning was just epic !!

Can’t believe how little rain we’ve had so far here considering. Is the stuff about to make landfall near Hastings of any interest?

Well.. what a cracking day it’s been for many. Didn’t have to chase for once and got rewarded by a real humdinger with insane lightning rates and treated to some spectacular distant lightning to my east and west simultaneously the night before! Us easterners have been utterly spoilt rotten today. Can still see the flickering from that beast from France/Belgium bullying its way up the coast! The distant rumbling only stopped an hour ago from half 4 this evening too!

As for that York cell, full marks for that! A TRUE supercell that was. Impressive mesocyclone by worldwide standards!

Today delivered some of the best and most CB’s I’ve ever witnessed in the UK second to none. What a summer!

For us in the SW and Wales, 2 new sferics detected outside to sea to our west. Something to monitor over the next few hours.

Seems to be a squall line approaching SW Cornwall.

Yeah this is what we should be focusing on! Given the large DLS I would expect it to develop and become more organised in the next few hours whilst becoming more thundery.

Could this reach the West Midlands and beyond

Yes potentially, we'll have a better idea later.

well I think think that is us done up here In Stockton, looked like there was going to be another storm come up but it looks like it has fragmented and going out into the north sea.

still getting the occasional flash to the east, but after a couple of years with no notable storms to if it has well and truly broke the drought.

I have never seen such an amount of lightning and thunder in my life, it was truly spectacular, but it gave a very good example of why people are scared of lightning.

Yep Tony over on UKWW mention this in his convective discussion for tomorrow. Pinning my hopes on this for tomorrow morning, if it makes it this far which it should if it’s the  secondary cold-front. Very high shear associated with it as has been said.

What concerns me about it is that there's less electrical activity showing up compared to what some models suggest at this current time. I think it will be mainly thundery rain with a few rumbles embedded rather than full on thunderstorms. It's also narrower than what is being modeled. It's moving pretty fast as well!

Just seen a huge flash miles away to my ESE, probably coming from that tiny cell near Market Weighton on the western edge of the E Yorks rain band. Thunder was really faint but prolonged and that cell has popped up very quickly from another decaying cell from looking at the radar returns.

Day 2 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sat 28 Jul 2018 - 05:59 UTC Sun 29 Jul 2018

ISSUED 22:34 UTC Fri 27 Jul 2018

ISSUED BY: Dan

A sharp upper trough will pivot northeastwards across central and southern Britain on Saturday, providing strong forced ascent along a cold front. This combined with a few hundred J/kg CAPE will allow convective elements to develop at times along the cold front, which will be located from The Wirral to West Sussex at the beginning of this forecast period. Some sporadic lightning and strong, gusty winds will be possible as this band of showery rain continues to pivot northeastwards, while fragmenting, through the morning. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. A low-end SLGT covers this risk.

By the afternoon, diurnal heating of the post-frontal airmass and cool air aloft beneath the upper trough will lead to several hundred J/kg CAPE, with scattered showers expected to develop, some containing isolated to sporadic lightning. A low-end SLGT has been issued to cover the broad risk area, but many places within the SLGT could remain lightning-free. Some hail and gusty winds will be possible with the most intense showers/storms.

Across northern and eastern Scotland, including the Northern Isles, remnants of the old instability plume will continue to destabilise with periods of heavy rain, with embedded elevated thunderstorm activity likely. The SLGT also covers this risk
