I thought I heard thunder, this confirms it. I am hoping for some storms tonight to set me up before I drive east tomorrow.

Yes I'm thinking of heading east along the motorway into Lincs tomorrow

Dan (convective weather) has the red risk box along with the severe over Lincolnshire and the Humber/East Yorkshire tomorrow. I am getting me some of that

Yep, I'll start at the M180/A180 services and see where's best from there. Only an hours drive thanks to the straight motorway :D

Beeb showing initiation around 2am for the Midlands and Pennines, lasting well up into the early morning hours. I won't be able to sleep in this heat anyway so it's a good excuse for pulling a all-nighter just on the hope of seeing some distant lightning, anything that comes overhead locally will be a bonus.

Moon is so bright tonight, but seeing means there is no cloud which equals no storms, bugger, lol

I reckon it's still a little early yet, my bets are something within the next 2-3 hours

Well it was very brief,2 flashes of lightning and 2 decent claps of thunder.Along with around one minutes worth of heavy rain. All calm again now hoping for more later.

At the risk of being criticised for saying this... it doesn’t feel like a big storm kind of a night anymore really.

a) lack of any decent areas of elevated cloud

b) humid and still warm but nothing out the ordinary where I am

c) no real areas of rain (yet)

I’m thinking it could be hours yet if anything does kick off

Have not had any rain since late may here, wondering what impact an intense downpour will have here in terms of flooding and sudden river rising.

Looking at rain radar for the last hour appears to be a band of rain weakened to nothing over the channel which appears to stretch up towards oxford area.

Its gone now - but looks suspiciously like what one of the models was picking up earlier on (AROME I think).

Wonder if that was supposed to be our opportunity

Yep, 2 cg's seen corresponding to the 2 sferics on blitzortung. Not the full destabilising yet though. I've got to work tomorrow but have already decided to drive out East soon as I can after, hopefully in time for the party!

It's starting to go the right way, so hard to get a photo but look at this (if you can see it)

Big fluffy clouds going up..

Well spotted @Surrey looks mid level and mackerel like. Hopefully it’s not just dross from the storms over N France earlier

Just had a big flash and booming rumble of thunder. Think it was from the cell near Mansfield but it surprised me a bit - thought it'd lost its potency.

@Surrey I have a better view of that cloud band from here (nicely illuminated by a London lights). Definitely promising looking to me, looks like a mid level band possibly AcCas.

  • Chilly with an increasing risk of frost

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
