With the recent active period of thundery weather, i thought it would be a good idea to post some useful basic links that can be used for storm forecasting and radar watching.

If you want to learn more about the various different storm setups that can affect the UK, this document by Netweathers very own NickF is a great read.  Thunderstorms in the British Isles.pdf

Radar and Lightning

I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing a subscription to Netweather Extra which gives access to the 5 minute rainfall radar, this is comfortably the best UK radar available to the public.

Backup UK Radar http://www.raintoday.co.uk/

Forecasts

ConvectiveWeather are in my opinion the most reliable storm forecasters for the UK, along with Nick here on Netweather. Storm forecasting is notoriously difficult but these guys always seem to pull off a forecast of good accuracy. ESTOFEX offer a much broader forecast as they cover the entire continent, but you can be sure that if they issue a forecast that includes the UK, there is a good chance of something interesting unfolding. Please remember that just because you may be in an area forecast for storms, the chance of actually seeing one is usually still low.

Charts

The below links will direct to various chart viewers all of which are useful for checking precipitation and CAPE, these of course are not the only ingredients required for thunderstorms, however for a starting point they give a good idea.

Can I add UK Weatherworld to this?

http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/

(Delete if you disagree but it’s a great resource for no-nonsense weather info - and Tony Gilbert is a fantastic forecaster)

Also my guilty pleasure is to type a location followed by ‘weather’ into google and check what their automated systems say - it’s usually wildly inaccurate but I still like it
