Wow, a minimum of -4.9C here which smashes my station's previous October record of -2.9C in 2008.

Ironically that's also just 0.4C away from the minimum that the beast from the east (and last winter) gave us, reason being the wind never dropped then to allow a valley inversion.
Some winters don't get a min this low.

Yesterday had -1.0C, and Saturday morning -1.9C. I also drove through sleety rain between Tiverton and Exeter on Saturday evening.

:cold: Blimey that's nippy out there. I'm currently knee deep in fairy making and leaving a trail of glitter in my wake all over the house, the garden has decided to join in the fun, looks like someone's taken a large pot of white glitter and spread it everywhere, thick, sparkly white frost covering everything this morning

I fear that's the end of the Dahlias, they'll be mush after last night.

Had some frosty bins last night as the temp got down to 0.5°C but the temp started rising shortly afterwards so no frost this morning. Hazy sunshine at the moment and 7.6°C.

Not quite as low last night as the night before with a low of 1.7°C although unlike last night there was a slight frost this morning, probably because of the lighter breeze. Mostly sunny now and the cold breeze is still there. 9.1°C

It's currently 1.1c with a dew point of -3c; with figures like that, if there was any precipitation around, I'd be getting excited. Blinking cold considering it's only just sunset.

Just past 6pm and it's already -0.3C here, this time last night it was +1.3C.
Not sure if it would end up colder than last night if it stayed clear all night, however in reality it shouldn't be quite that cold due to more cloud that's forecast to come in.

It has dropped quite quickly here, not as low as Et above though. Currently 3.7°C. Hoping for a sub-zero though, just to give me a new October record. Today's sunshine has put my total above average by quite a way now, and above the Met Office's derived data. Almost the same as September's total and more than April's. :)

First time its dropped below freezing here this autumn currently with a temperature of -1.8C.

Thought it was suppose to be getting milder now, happy about it though as I didn't wan't to go through a forecasted cold snap without it getting to - minus figures.

Down to 1.0°C now so already the coldest night so far. Can I manage an air frost tonight?

Surprisingly, i'm down to -0.7°C now.

I've just had a look back on previous data and that looks to be the coldest October temp I have recorded since 2011.

I can only go back to last year but it took until 30th November before there was an air frost here then. Looking very likely I'll beat that tonight as it's dropped to 0.6°C since my post above.

Morning All an overnight low of -1.0 °C has been quickly chased away as cloud has drifted over producing rain showers which has driven the current temperature up to 2.8 °C . With a light ESE breeze developing after 2:30 this morning there's no ice scraping to be done here this morning.

Low of -3.8C at 00:30, no frost this morning as it's currently 3.6C and we had a rain shower giving 0.4mm just before 6am. There was quite a nice sunrise, lighting some of the cumulus clouds up in orange.

I notice it's still around -1C in places towards Exeter, and at the airport.

Morning all, another bright, frosty start to the day here but cloud is rolling in and the frost is lifting. According to Gibby and his local weather site, it was officially the coldest October night for years.

'It’s been the coldest October night since at least the start of the millennium across the area with temperatures currently close to -4C so a very hard frost especially down here in the valley. There are some clouds around leading to a very atmospheric sunrise.'

Good morning everyone,

I've been very busy on a US forum but I will cross-post onto both forums for my specialist Arctic, Greenland, Antarctica and teleconnections posts and of course I'll be here on own regional thread when I can and especially when things get really interesting.  I've seen all your posts on the unusually cold night we had yesterday and many of us have recorded their lowest October minimums for many years. Even down here in Exmouth I managed -3.5c and Exeter was below -4c and it was below -5c just north of Exeter and towards some central parts of Devon (some final readings still to come in). Looks like these were the lowest values in England with only a gentle north east "off-shore" wind - lighter than elsewhere. It was colder in parts of Wales and Scotland (see map below). This was the lowest October minimum in Exmouth since official records began in the town in 1968!  I'll try to track down earlier (unofficial records).  To get this cold down here right on the coast  (and by the mouth of the River Exe) at this time of the year (with SSTs by the coast still at 16c to 17c) we really need Arctic air, clear skies and a gentle north east drift - we get the first from time to time, not always the second and more rarely the third in combination. We often do not get a ground frost until well into November and on average our first air frost is in early December (with huge year to year variations of course).  So this is quite exceptional.

Photography is not one of my strong points but some of those sunsets last week in particular were truly spectacular and incredibly beautiful.  I've seen a few great photos on here, so please forgive the quality of mine taken from an upstairs window in a rush:

It got down to -2.3°C here which surprised me. I woke up after a notification to say rain was close by. I looked at my webcam and it was raining, and the temp was still -2°C lol

Currently partly cloudy and 11.9°C.
