Things could get interesting for an hour or two as the sun sets...

More towers going up south of that main decaying cell.

And has anyone seen what’s happening in France?

Yes they’ve really done really well today over there and it’s still going strong.

Interesting afternoon. Had an imposing surface based storm cell move down to my east earlier, thundering as it went. Couldn't see any lightning but had a spectacular cloud structure at times. Then two cells grew very quickly just to the south stretching narrow anvils right over my location. They also started thundering, quite loud at times. However, both anvils were drawn into the eastern cell. One cell then had the life drained out of it, while the other kept rumbling but it also eventually went the same way. Really bizarre to watch an anvil rapidly growing and stretching over your head and then making contact with and joining another cell. Definitely in a sweet spot this afternoon.

Day 2 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Tue 29 May 2018 - 05:59 UTC Wed 30 May 2018

ISSUED 19:29 UTC Mon 28 May 2018

ISSUED BY: null

A complicated set-up with combination of mid-level instability drifting back into southern Britain and warm, humid conditions by the afternoon that will lead to surface based convection.

ONGOING AT BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD...

Southeastern England

Elevated convection that will drift in by the end of Monday night will bring the risk of some lighting across Kent, Essex and perhaps into parts of Suffolk and London, before weakening into mid-morning. This is marginal for lightning frequency post 06z on Tuesday.

DAYTIME...

Southwestern Ireland, southern England, southern Wales

Mid-level instability will be present across southern parts of England, but surface based convection will struggle to develop despite CAPE values in excess of 1000 J/kg due to a capping inversion around 800mb along with some drier mid-level air. That being said, widely distributed isolated thunderstorms are possible across parts of southern England and Wales. It should be stressed that most areas will remain dry. If a specific area can be highlighted more confidently an upgrade to slight may be made. The strongest signal for surface based thunderstorms will be across southwestern Ireland, and a slight risk has been issued for that area.

OVERNIGHT...

Southern England

A fresh round of mid-level instability will spread out of the continent from the southeast to northwest overnight. Mid-level convection is possible quite widely from southeastern England into East Anglia and the Midlands by the end of the night. It remains uncertain how electrically active this round of mid-level instability will be. A slight risk is included for the far southeast as it arrives, but further northwest the the risk remains isolated for now.

That new convective outlook puts me in the low zone lol. Can't complain, it's better then being in no zone.

Pretty happy with my nowcast from mid morning today - shame the met boys couldn’t get the message out there. The bbc web page was spouting about amber warnings for this afternoon. Hope it didn’t put people off getting out and about.

@Gonzolio Martinez Come and live in East Yorkshire, always a feature when the wind is off the N Sea and the land is hot(ish..). It's called a 'fret' and acts line a dry line. It creeps inland from the coast in the evening and overnight (it's here now) and then, as the land warms-up, it evaporates back to the coast. Sometimes from the Wolds you can see the line across Holderness as a grey wall of cloud on hot days. It can make days on Bridlington Beach very cold when it arrives... Sounds like you had something similar this evening.

Looks like convergence winds later Wednesday could give the southern half of Britain some wild and intense thunderstorms:gathering:

Certainly not as much like The Day After Tomorrow as last night was but there has been some awesome developments off to the east. Didn't seem to be a very lively cell but it certainly bubbled up fast and was a monster compared to most of the cells I'm used to seeing here.

What way are the storms in France going? Looking at the lightning it seems like North East?

If it were to go north west I'd be in with a shout of something first thing tomorrow.

Meteociel Arome model shows the storms moving towards the south coast while losing intensity - may be some night time lightning over the channel I guess. First strike in the channel just now.
