For my location we had the best May in living memory and summer is on course to be one of the best of the century only behind 2006, 2013. Depends on what August is like but I can’t see it betterin them 2 years here. 2003, 2014, 2016 could be beaten though.

Cloud broke up by 11am, to give cumulus and sunny intervals. In a sunny spell it reached 28.1C but both lower and then mid level cloud meant no sun at all from 3pm until about 7pm with the temp hovering near 25C. Some late sun now and cooling down a bit, bringing the sunshine total up to 4.0 hours. It does beg the question would it have got hotter, and follows the theme this summer on the potential hottest days of warm spells

The dew point has been notable hovering around 20C all day. I felt pretty warm after a walk in cloudy conditions and a temp/dew of 25/20C.

I'm not sure they calculate UK-wide figures but surely you must realise that there is a lot more to the UK than just South East England.. the fact that it was rainless or nearly rainless for parts of the SE is irrelevant to the wider UK picture.

Of course that goes without saying. I was under the impression a lot of the the uk had a dry June I only mention the SE as that’s where I live and know for sure didn’t have any rain. Looking at the weather patterns for the whole of uk I’d have thought it’d have been drier but guess not.

When was the last time all three summer months reached 30C? Im thinking it must be 2003 but maybe I'm missing one? I just shows you just how abysmal August has been recently. 2016 has the only one which was even okay.

2015

June - 32.5c at Heathrow on the 30th

July - 36.7c at Heathrow on the 1st

August - 30.9c at Kew Gardens and Gravesend on the 22nd

Unexpected seeing how bad the summer was as a whole. But except from that it was last in 2003

There was also 2004 and 2005.

2004

June - 31.5c at Cambridge on the 8th

July - 30.1c in Central London on the 29th

August - 31.5c at Northolt and Central London on the 7th/8th

2005

June - 33.1c in Central London on the 19th

July - 31.7c at Gravesend on the 14th

August - 32.2c in Central London on the 31st

2006 was almost one but August was 0.3c short at 29.7c.

Seems I was very wrong indeed then...

Last time we reached 30C in August was 2013. In fact, that's the only time it's reached 30C in August since 2005.

It's ridiculous when you consider that before 2007, August was the month that reached 30C most often in this area - 2005, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1999,1997,1996, 1995 all reached 30C at least once in August (2-4 in some i.e 1999, 2003, 1995). Some of those summers were unremarkable as well.

Also, its reached 30C more times in June since 2007 than in July or August here.

Pretty incredible really.

I have found that recent summers are front-loaded in terms of the good weather as the Atlantic ocean is cooler at the start of the season and hence has less energy to fuel weather systems/the jet sream.  Later in the summer as the oceans warm the Atlantic has enough energy to barrel through any high pressure that forms over the UK.

tbh, reaching 30c in august or anytime is pretty useless if its a 24-48 hour plume event. as has been mentioned, most of those augusts when 30c was reached were bad augusts and 30c was only reached for a few hours in a few places.

id sooner have a week of 25c then 24-48 hours of 30c.

Most of them were perfectly fine - 2002 probably the worst of them, at least here (mostly due to high rainfall), though even that was comfortably warmer than average.

i likes my 30c to be reached after a steady climb through the 20's  in a building anticyclonic spell..

Overcast start and it's still cloudy yet again, the weather seems to be trying it's best to drag this summer's rating down considering these are supposed to be the hottest days before it cools down (there's also the downgrade of 1pm temps from 26C to 21C over 5 ECM runs for tomorrow).

Lets see how the forecast of sunny at 12 goes.

31C in my room. I'm waking up in puddles of sweat at the moment. Washed my bedsheets yesterday but they already need doing again. I usually cool the flat down by opening all the windows during a thunderstorm (the outside temperature often drops by 10C and a strong wind kicks in) but the one proper storm I've had passed through yesterday evening when I was out. Back to hot breezelessness today.

It hasn't been below 20C here since I returned last Sunday. Might get up to 36C on Thursday. It's still much better than 18C and rain though.

Warmest spot in the country today I believe, although St James Park briefly reached 29C. Haven't experienced any summer like it in the UK, by this point in August even the legendary 2006 was faltering, and that didn't have a good May (apart from one day on the 4th May in 2006) compared to the fantastic May this year. even 1976 had a worse May than this.

I think it is too high now the value for it to get that low. It would need an absolute diabolical second half and current weather now is only going to make that task even more difficult.
