Still quite a respectful finish at 6th place, or 5th in the last 100 years. It was consistently running at 3rd place throughout July though, so it was a bit of a shame that August brought it down so much. Really been fascinating seeing how this Summer has been fairing against other years on your index, cheers.

Despite the relatively poor August, it’s been the warmest summer overall in London since 2013 or 2014, and the sunniest one since 2003 or even 1995.

I hope we don’t have to wait another 5 or 10 years to experience a summer like this one.

And the all time record from 2003 still stands  Thankfully we avoided the worst of the heat.

Summer was pretty epic here, sunshine/temp wise along with lack of rainfall.

Unfortunately I had issues with my PC mid July for a few weeks so I have a gap in my data which means no averages/means etc.

The highest temp we had was 29.9c which is about right for our highest temp (usually one day hits 30c every year).

It was more the prolonged day after day of temps in the mid to high twenties.

The temperature being over 20c after 9pm is usually about as rare as an ice day here, being very rural surrounded by fields but I actually lost count this year.

Summer then finished in quite an opposite fashion temperature wise, with the last day recording 3.4c, my coldest ever summer temperature by 2c.

Thunderstorm wise it was a very quiet summer, apart from late July when we had a direct hit from a supercell which knocked down a 40 year old tree opposite our house that landed in the neighbours garden.

My picture made the local paper so this summer storm wise was very much a one hit wonder.

Very few storms round here either this summer.

Great pic for the article. Well done.

Summer 2018 was the joint hottest on record for the UK and the hottest on record for England

Officially the hottest summer in England and it really has felt like it! Temperatures on most days have been above 25oC since as early as May and even today it looks like again topping out at nearly 25oC.

2018, the year I bought an aircon unit for my bedroom just to get some sleep and a summer I won't be forgetting anytime soon!

In my opinion yesterday was perfect! Bright blue skies, 25.3oC and a very light cooling breeze! If only it could be like that for a couple more months and then some deep snow ☀️

How can it be the joint hottest on record equalling 1976?...on the August CET thread Hadley had 16.6c for August which made 2018 5th hottest so what's gone on?

Maybe Roger J Smith/Bornfromthevoid can answer this, personally didn't feel it was hot as 1976, June certainly wasn't. MetO doctoring figures? and by the way I'm not a GW sceptic.

I was wondering where the mean temp for this summer would end up, with the caveat that in a warming world it's easier to get mean temps rivalling the 'hottest' without quite such exceptional 'on the ground' feel, as it no longer requires quite such exceptional synoptics and the resulting sunshine/mean maxima anomalies.. Not sure how much that applies to this summer though though.

If a 1976 occurred today I guess it could be around 0.5C warmer?
I expect if/when we do get another summer to rival that synoptic wise, we will beat mean temp records by quite a significant margin.. like much of Scandinavia has this summer (and in May).

Anyway August was too cloudy here (February had similar sunshine levels), for this summer to rival the 'best ever'. I think by most measures that is the case here.. sunshine, mean maxima, days over e.g. 25C, and extreme maxima have been higher in the best previous summers.
It was still very good though.

I find this a bit baffling as well. I know that this statistic is for England as an whole, rather than just the CET zone, but I'm surprised that there'd be that much difference in the results. CET records of course go all the way back to 1659 and I'd imagine stats that we can rely on for England as an whole don't go quite so far back, but nevertheless the top 5 warmest Summers, with the exception of 1826 (2nd warmest) all occurred in the last 42 years, so does that mean for England as an whole 2018 is the equal warmest with 1976, but in the CET zone alone it's beaten by 2003, 1995, 1826 and 1976? As I say I don't know how far back these whole of England stats go, but they surely include all those top 5 Summers with possibly the exception of 1826. So I'm also curious as to how this conclusion was made.

Interesting Met office map showing hottest summers, for far north of England, 1995 and 2003 and 2006 were all warmer. In Cumbria a mix between 1995 - not surprised, and 2006 - more surprised at that one, with some oddities in the fells, with a number of other years appearing.

I also believe it has been the mild minima which has helped to make it the warmest in England.

Summer 2018 excellent June and July, a lacklustre August - but not as good overall as 1995 for the Lake District.

The thing that struck me about the summer just gone was that there were no really outstanding high maxima around here. They were hotter days during 1995, 2003 and 2006 and 1995 certainly felt a hotter summer to me than 2018.
