'might as well make the most of it'...really? you don't anticipate much of this in the years ahead then? as I certainly do.

No, not really. I bet the 1991-2020 averages for the UK will show that the summers haven't warmed all that much, if at all. Most of the warming in the UK has taken place in other seasons, especially spring and autumn.

And if this summer really is a precursor of things to come then we'll have no choice but to get used to it.

Agree about the warmer spring and autumns, up until the last few summers (approx from 2013) I agree again but since 2013 the summers have definitely improved down here and I can see this being wider scale in years to come...

Here, the period 1991-2017 average for summer is 0.2C warmer than the 1981-2010 average. There's still three years to go of course for the full 1991-2020 mean, but the equivalent differences in winter, spring and autumn are 0.3C, 0.3C and 0.2C.

Actually very little in it. You have to remember that a lot of the 80s summers were much worse temperature-wise than now. 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 were all cooler than 2012 for example. These will fall off and be replaced by the much warmer summers of the 2010s.

The sad thing is many people don't appreciate that people really struggle in this, from young babies to elderly to asthmatic. Meanwhile they're sitting there going yay it could be 40oC. I'm same as you - hate the heat. Suffer really bad with prickly heat. It's a nightmare.

I have to admit my patience with this forum is failing.  There are so many heat-lovers (or just those whose pride won't let them admit to the contrary) who seem to refuse to accept that members like us are genuinely finding this heat difficult.  I wouldn't have the arrogance or insensitivity to inform someone else online that I thought they were weak or pathetic if they admitted that they found severe cold weather difficult due to Reynaud's Syndrome or winters generally depressing thanks to SAD, so I do wish the heat-lovers would stop flaunting their self-satisfaction at how much they thrive in this weather and want it to get even hotter.  I'm genuinely pleased for them but a) it isn't a cultivated talent, merely a fortunate characteristic, and b) I'm afraid to say that I find the pleasure they seem to get in taunting those of us who struggle rather baffling and saddening.  If I experienced schadenfreude from the discomfort of others I'd regard it as a personality flaw, but in the modern age when we're told to "fake it till you make it" and people are lauded for aggressive and baseless self-promotion *coughTheApprenticecough*, it seems that it's instead something to be proud of.  Oh well, I was old-fashioned even as a teenager; might as well accept being even more of a relic now.

The real question now is could we be about to break multiple summer records?

The monthly CET record of 19.7 looks unlikely to be breached. However it looks likely that this July 2018 will be joining the exclusive club of 19c+ CET months.

But, if we have an above average August, the summer record could well be threatened.

whilst its been a very dry warm/hot summer in the UK..here it has been a very flip flop summer thus far...warm/hot one week..cool and relatively wet the next...last week was hot and sunny..the last 5 days have been cool and wet..back to hot and sunny by Thursday for a few days before looks like it cools down once again...downside is that everything is very green and lawns need mowing constantly  :wallbash:which is very unusual for here

This month is certainly turning into something exceptional here. Our current mean is 18.9C, just 0.4C short of what July 2006 finished on. If the temperatures shown on the GFS 06z were to come to fruition, we would actually finish above it on 19.4C.

Considering we've only ever had two other summer months above 18.0C in 38 years (August 1990 and 1997), I didn't expect another month to get so close this soon!

Lots of cloud today with a light to moderate breeze keeping the temp in the low 20's the breeze is quite refreshing

Here's an interesting brief mid-term report on this summer from this part of the country, written by Dr Rob Thompson of the University of Reading's meteorology department. So far this summer has in many ways rivalled 1976 but without the extreme temperatures - it will be interesting to see a comparison later in the season, as temperatures peaked early in summer 1976 whereas they are showing every sign of rising further this year:

Meanwhile, here in Worcs look likely to be mid-20s, high 20s on Thursday, then dropping at the weekend. I don't expect I'm the only person in this situation, but with the real heat always concentrated further S/E it looks increasingly possible that I could have one of the most consistently warm, dry summers in recent decades and never once hit 30 °C! (Max so far 29.4 °C, and that was in June!)

This is actually starting to annoy me, hence my posting in this thread. I'm not too bothered about missing out on record heat -- if the SE hits 38 °C then they're welcome to it! But given that in most summers Bewdley hits the big 3-0 at least once, I would like to see a "3" on the front of the reading just once to put the lid on a remarkable summer.

Below 22c now the breeze is really helping to cool the rooms down after yesterday's humidity

You are not alone in that regard. Yesterday was the first day to break the 30c barrier where it hit 32c. I must have had a good half dozen 29c maxima so far during this settled spell including today.

Though to be fair 29c and lower humidity today felt far better than yesterday which was quite oppressive.

Ditto, 30 at least once please. And can we please get rid of all this cloud?

think of me, Sun and mon, worse than cloud, GFS going for wet and windy and below 20 degrees

you'll be dry I feel, protected by pennines, maybe not sunny, but at least dry
