Summer 2018 - Moans, Ramps, Chat etc

Couldn’t agree more. We’ve had to endure plenty of crappy weather in many recent summers. I’m hoping that the traditional summer holiday period is not ruined by chilly and wet Atlantic filth. It can wait until October!

August 1976 was hot and sunny up till about the 27th (bank holiday weekend) when it turned very wet.

July 1966 was unsettled with frequent thunderstorms. Quarter final day (Saturday 23rd) was hot and sunny but the weather in the week before the final was cool and wet.

On the day itself there was a storm around midday. From footage of the teams coming out of the tunnel you can see the ground is still wet. The match was dry and the sun came out just before the end.

Yes, I have no doubt we'll get our fair share of rain in autumn and winter. The thing with droughts in the UK is they never last very long.. it's not like we're in California or anything, lol.

Exactly. Some farmers might be challenged but on the other hand, all those associated with tourism and outdoor activities will be enjoying a much needed boost. Hopefully, we can squeeze out a decent August, too, before the inevitable cloud, wind and rain return.

Hopefully, we'll get more than our fair share, cheese (as that's what many reservoirs'll need by then?)...But, should what the 'sunspotters' seem to be saying turn out to be anywhere near true - one or two lengthy runs of spotless days will mean a winter of loads of HP-dominated weather - there may only the occasional blizzard to liven things up?

In both 1975 and 1976 there were what could be called 'breakdowns' in the middle of July. At almost exactly this date in 76 it turned thundery and relatively cool for about 10 days. Remember it well because it washed the ladybirds away. 

In 75 it was unsettled for about two weeks but in both years the heat returned for the final week of July and lasted for most of August. Not saying this will happen in 2018 but the similarities are fairly striking.

As someone who loves the heat and sunshine, I have no problem with a few days of temperatures in the low 20's as long as we don't enter a cool, unsettled spell. 

Last summer we had a pretty good first half up until mid July, then as soon as the pattern changed we were locked into cool, fairly unsettled weather through most of the next 4/5 weeks. the temperature in London didn't exceed 23c again until the end of August.

Havn`t been in those greens lately but those sweaty nights will hopefully p off,thats tomorrow,still warm this time of year,very mild in deep winter.

Surely lots of snow = lots of water when it melts? Depending on the snow to water ratio. Even excluding any rain we got in March, we got a lot of precipitation just from snow melt.

Anyway, my point is that in the UK wet, windy weather is inevitable - it will return at some point, and will probably last for months - such is the peril of living on an island in the North Atlantic. And the thing is, the rest of us have to put up with it. The kind of weather we've had for the past 6 weeks is very unusual in the UK and there's a good chance we won't get anything like it for years and years. Surely the least you heat haters can do is just let us enjoy it while it lasts instead of moaning all the time?

Come on Nick - posting on here takes like 10 seconds and can be done almost anywhere from the inside of your house to the top of Scafel Pike. It hardly takes a big chunk out of someone's day and it certainly doesn't indicate that they're not outside enjoying the weather (and it's a cloudy day here so not much weather to enjoy in any case - but rest assured my fabulous tan has been building since the last week of April).

Looking at tonights ECM any breakdown doesn't look like bringing any meaningful rain and high pressure returns by the end of the run

I don't really care that much how warm it gets peeps, it's the thought of another two-weeks without any useful rainfall that bothers me: green vegetables, cereal crops and milk-supplies will all be increasingly under threat...But I guess we Brits enjoy a wee bit of food-price inflation?
