Last month saw the hottest temperature ever recorded in Scotland and was the driest June on record in parts of England.

Some areas received only 6% of expected rainfall, with Middlesex getting just 0.7mm, Essex 1.7mm and Dorset 2mm.

A temperature of 33.2C was recorded in Motherwell, Scotland, on June 28 - comfortably breaking the 32.9C set in August 2003 at Greycook, on the borders.

Good forecast from Gavsweathervids

Looks to be hot and dry for the rest of the month, perhaps a slight blip for the far North around mid month, but south staying warm and dry

So it was indeed record breaking last week. I wonder if any more reports will come in from Ireland and N Ireland, where they were also very close to their all time records?

And our record in June is 32C (though 33C in 1 July 2015). In fact, their record high is now only about 1C lower than hours. I think if they can reach 33C in June then Leeds should be able to easily exceed its 34.4C record from August 1990. It's annoying how long that record has stood for.

That August 1990 spell was unbelieveable in the North, even here we hit 34.0C that day. To put it into context, we haven't hit 30C now for 17 years!

We've hit 30C countless times. In fact, every year from 2015-2017 has hit 30C and I'm hoping 2018 makes four in a row. 2013 and 2011 were the other years this decade to reach 30C.

But what I really want is a record breaker. I want the August 1990 record to be blown out of the water.

Yes, my point was the spell was so exceptional that we reached 34.0C here, a place that hasn't reached 30C since 2001 despite many hot spells. Thats how unusual it was.

Yeah, I get that - it was definitely exceptional. And my point is that 33.2C in Motherwell is even more exceptional for that location, especially in June, and given how cool and wet it is there compared to here (while more years than not reach 30C here, you can probably count on one hand the number of times it's been reached in Scotland over the past 15 years). So we should be able to reach even higher than August 1990 under perfect conditions. We missed out on a record breaker in 2003 (highest was 'only' 32C) so I'm hopeful we'll get one soon.

Never gonna achieve that with all these easterlies though. Need a hot southerly or southwesterly. Given how dry things are, then a hot southerly at the end of this spell could certainly deliver that.

Heatwave to last another 2 weeks

Just woke up and had a skim through the models, there is simply no sign of any meaningful rainfall for the next 2 weeks. It's not a question of when will the drought end, it's a case of how bad will it get?

Good job we had a reasonably wet Autumn and Winter we should get through this summer without any major implications though a few restrictions in some of the higher populated areas may be enforced if August doesn't see much rain?

The misery continues then till mid July,oh what joy.... Just hope mother nature balances this out with much needed rain and cooler temps the rest of Summer. Was up near the wildfires north of Manchester today, the devastation was appalling,it will take a decade to fully recover according to latest reports.

Fans don't cool the air though, all they do is circulate the air and increase sweat evaporation off the skin,

What I have done in the past is to suspend a cloth bag, full of ice in front of the fan, with a bowl  underneath to catch the drips.

Its been an unbelievable start to summer so far. May and June were both the sunniest on record by some way here, with 280hrs (139%) and 241hrs (131%). In fact, since 1st May we have averaged 8.8hrs of sunshine per day, which is no mean feat considering how persistent the easterlies have been. We've only seen 44.2mm of rain in that time too, which was spaced over just 14 days of measurable rain since 28th April. We're now on our 16th day without any precipitation at all.

Interestingly we've only surpassed 23C on eight occasions in 2018, two of which were in April, two in May, three in June and once on the 1st of this month. As a result, June was only 1.3C above the 1981-2010 average. The first two days of July are actually running 0.4C below average!

Incredible really. It’s pretty rare for anywhere in Scotland to get to 30c, let alone 33c and have the highest temperature recorded anywhere in the UK so far this summer.

Getting into the low 30s is a fairly common occurence down here in London, however what has been really remarkable about May and June is areas that aren’t as favoured for hot weather seeing so much of it. Eg W Scotland, W Wales, NI Ireland etc.

A level 2 heatwave alert is in place for all regions in England expect the north-west and northeast. The warning is in place until Saturday but is expected to be extended.

Current watch level: Level 2 - Alert and Readiness

Issued at: 08:31 on Tue 3 Jul 2018

There is a 70 % probability of heatwave conditions between 0900 on Tuesday and 0700 on Saturday in parts of England.

Temperatures are expected to temporarily reduce a little night and day through the middle of this week, before lighter winds allow higher temperatures across more eastern areas of England during Thursday and to some extent during Friday. Relative to the alert issued yesterday, Monday 02 July, all areas of England are now on a level 2 alert - aside from Northwest and Northeast which remain below threshold. Southeast and Southwest have also been downgraded from level 2 from 3. This alert has been issued for the maximum duration possible. It is very likely to be extended for similar areas later this working week, provisionally Thursday or Friday as heat is expected to build towards the weekend and possibly during the following week. Even in areas that do not breach their alert criteria, the headline is that it is expected to remain largely dry, often sunny and very warm at times.

An update will be issued when the alert level changes in any region. Alerts are issued once a day by 0900 if required and are not subject to amendment in between standard issue times. Note that the details of the forecast weather are valid at the time of issue but may change over the period that an alert remains in force. These details will not be updated here unless the alert level also changes, the latest forecast details can be obtained at the following link: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/#?tab=map

The low cloud we had this morning didn't burn away entirely but instead 'turned' into cumulus. I don't get that at all. Virtually everywhere else in the UK has clear skies while we have partly cloudy skies.

Not sure what the reason for that is but it's kind of irritating.
