Yeah, it's pretty stupid how that happens for seemingly no logical reason. It's clearing well here though.

Probably a weakness somewhere in the middle for the sun to break through. The sunlight then manages to warm the ground very locally, that warms the air above and creates enough mixing to clear the skies. The surrounding clear skies then allow further heating through positive feedback most likely.

I think that the shape of the coastline must have an effect too: areas downwind of, say, The Wash or the Moray Firth will see cloud being funnelled, in a never-ending stream; places either side of these zone (like here) however, will see cloud disperse far quicker than you'd expect, were it down to coastal proximity alone...?

PS: There's barely a cloud in the sky!

A bit of a difference for the next few days between what the BBC and Met Office are showing for max temps. Are the Met Office undercooking temps?

Here's the next 6 days for London from both:

BBC (use raw ECM data?):

I was also surprised the cloud has burned more from east to west than vice versa. I just expected with an onshore flow it would be the other way round and take much longer to shift. Happy to be proved wrong, as it's meant it's crystal clear here a lot earlier than I though it would be!

Those met ones will be miles out. There's no way it will only be 24c in London today!

Hardly heatwave territory.

It's so unusual to see the hottest weather over west Wales/NW England/N Ireland and W Scotland.

Due to the early morning cloud cover that has now cleared, the temperature in London and many other eastern areas is only just breaking the 20c mark currently, whereas further west it's rocketing into the high 20's. It's usually the other way round.

We've just had a discussion in the office...I think it will max out at about 26c.

Not really.  Hawarden (nr. Chester) often features in highest temps. in the UK as it did yesterday.

Yes, but it is unusual to see the hottest air out west. I understand why it is happening today, however it is a relatively rare occurrence, especially when we have a proper heatwave where temperatures are breaking the 30c mark. Aviemore is currently one of the hottest places in the country. How often does that happen? Likewise, the west coast of Wales, the NW coast of England and parts of N Ireland. It doesn't happen very often.

Only when there's an east wind.

And even more so during April, May and June, when the North Sea is still relatively cold.

Although still very warm, just 22*C(ish) in this part at the moment. Interesting that some places further West are getting the hotter temperatures. Maybe to do with the positioning of the high and the topography of some areas in the West. ?‍♂️

(Them again, if their had been some cloud around here this morning, and especially areas even further East, guess that could have been the culprit too).

You forget the foehn effect. Hawarden does pretty well in a winter SWly

Yes, but during a typical UK hot spell it's going to be SE locations dominating the top spots. Say the London area and up to Cambridgeshire and maybe Norfolk too.

All to do with the wind flow of course:

http://www.weathercharts.net/noaa_ukmo_analysis/PPVA89.gif?31415

All the air is being scooped up from the south and sent In a NW direction, drying out and warming up en route. There's also a plum of warmer uppers transferring across the UK which is further boosting temperatures in the west.

It's also reached 30c already on Merseyside (Woodvale).

Yep, again quite unusual. I wonder how many times the NW coast of England has hit 30c with the centre of London at 24c (as it is currently). Pretty rare I'd say.
