STOP PRESS

T above 10 C for the first time this week, 10.2 C as I type.

Even more amazing, there 'appears' to be a break in the solid grey cloud sheet!

Here in the North Pennines we have had four sunless foggy and chilly days in a row, none of the last three days got above 4-5C, today we reach 7C. Still foggy!  There are still quite big snow-drifts (i.e. over five foot depth) from last month's blizzards on the higher fells.  Fields finally starting to turn a pale green having been pale-brown since the snow-cover thawed on 22nd March.

It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
