Thanks. Interesting that you have to go back to 1947 to find another spell before 2018 that included days in March.

Interestingly, you take out 1962-63, the 60s were not exactly full of prolonged freezing spells.

Compare that with 1940s, even if you leave out 1940 and 1947.

Gawd and I've experienced two of them, I'll let you guess which two!

In total of the list above 56 I have lived through.

Perhaps now some of you may understand why I do not want long periods of deep cold.

Following on from the cold outbreaks earlier on in this extended winter, I promised to produce a report of all the cold spells. that  could be used for future reference.

This report has now been finalised.

I have used as a base the above data produced by Weatherhistory on all CET temperatures below 0C, and have examined the 850's associated with each of the cold spells.

To do this I used NCEP archived data on Meteociel.

The link to the data is shown below -

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hcnnc12ncl77puj/Winter review 13 Final.pdf?dl=0

Please note  that I do not claim total accuracy, but rather the report is designed to give a realistic average for the 850 parameters.

I intend leaving the report on my dropbox, but if anyone would like to take copies of the report that  would not be a problem.

Enjoy...

Will this coming period be added to this list?

High chance maxes from tomorrow for most in CET zone until Thursday at least no higher than 2 degrees, with minima sub freezing, how low is the question.. difference between a return mean just below 0 degrees or something substantively colder, the wind and cloud will prevent anything especially low in CET zone, lowest mins reserved for sheltered western parts and Scotland under clearer skies

Provisionally, we have:

7th: 1.8C

8th: 0.5C

9th: -0.5C

10th: -0.6C

11th: -1.7C

12th: 0.1C

13th: -0.2C

It's possible the 8th and the 12th receive corrections which take them into negative territory, giving us a potential run of six days. The provisional mean for the 8th-13th is -0.4C.

Are these CET means? It adds weight to my view there will be marked downward corrections this month, the past 2 CET running returns look high to me based on the rolling mean value.

Yes, these are CET means. Speaking from observation, cold values such as those above tend to get corrected downwards, so we could well see a few tenths of a degree chiselled off in each case.

It's for the whole month. The Met Office publish provisional figures throughout the month for daily CET values, which are adjusted at the end of the month to give the final daily figures (and from which a monthly mean is derived).

So yes, we'll have to wait till March to see the cold spell's final figures.

Surprised the provisional figures for 7th to 13th are as high as they are. Despite a lack of snow it really did feel bitter, like in good old days gone by.  Perhaps the night minima haven't been especially low..

There may also be a big downward amendment at the end of the month.

The last day of the cold spell was the 13th, which is why I didn't wait to include the 14th. The provisional figure for the 14th is 2.9C.

Well what im interested in is the CET for the cold spell, and how it compares to the list of cold spells @Weather-history posted at the top of this thread... not the month as a whole.
