It's because of the strat warming event of February, the effects are still being felt, blocking highs are still dominating our weather.

That's echoed in (3) here. From TWO:

Update 1 suggests a significantly higher than average chance of snow this Christmas in both the north and south of the UK.

The primary reasons for this are:

1) Background signals including ENSO and QBO are not likely to be big drivers of the UK's weather during early winter.

2) We are close to a solar minimum.

3) Since the Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) in February there has been an ongoing signal for high pressure blocks to have more influence on the UK's weather than normal. In the late winter and early spring northern blocking led to widespread snow as the Beast from the East made its presence felt. That was followed by one of the warmest (it could turn out to be the warmest once all of the data has been collated) summers on record in the UK due to the persistence of anticyclonic conditions. As we head into the meteorological autumn the elevated signal for high pressure still appears to be present.

It is a dreich day in South Ockendon. It looks like today will be a sun-free day in Thurrock.  The sky is completely overcast, the humidity is high at 78%, winds are coming from a south westerly direction and the temperature is 14 °C

Yes indeed it is. That horrible sort of drizzle that soaks you. I will be stewarding at my local football ground today and hope that it clears up by midday when us volunteers ready the ground for the 3 pm kickoff.

Looking forward too next week when the weather is on the up again.

Kind Regards

Dave

Sixty-three today and a week tomorrow, will be exactly three years since I had a brain haemorrhage/stroke. So really feel lucky to be alive still, after "dying" twice but thanks to our brilliant NHS and the love and care, from my wife,  I'm still here to tell the tale!!

Just had a walk to the shops with my wife, felt quite humid when the sun poked out, briefly.

Hope you all have a lovely day, I'm determined to.

Regards,

Tom.

Happy birthday and best wishes for continued good health.

Back in the UK now from a holiday in Vegas!

Saw a couple of beauties in the distance in the surrounding mountain areas and off towards Arizona. The heat over there really is something else though. I will not whine about 30-31c again!!

I still have my winter stuffs in packing bags still in the bedroom, they never made it in the loft as too hot/ill too move'em. So I shall be mostly sorting though them as the mornings are a little chilly and I need jumpers and hoodies. Sun is still quite warm.

sunny and breezie and roast in oven, smells like sunday.

Great pics as ever. Keeps the interest in this thread to counteract the mindlessly tedious weather.

Going to be 20c and cloudy today.

September is a quiet month weather wise and in here generally - over on the mod thread a few hints at the weather turning a bit wilder around the equinox ....

Pumpkins nearly ready! Lovely late afternoon yesterday, warm sunshine. Melons picked

Talk going round the allotment of a cold winter ahead...lot of people not bothering with autumn planing onions etc... End of evening visits to allotments soon as we're losing almost 4 minutes of light per evening at the mo.

The Met Office really should stop the Express linking to their site in order to promote Rao's utter rubbish.
