Probably going to finish on 9.7°c after adjustments. Some regional variation where the south will have the highest anomaly again (possibly over 2.0°c) whereas the north will probably be within 1.0°c of the 71-2000 average.

Sunny Sheffield still at 9.2C +1.2C above normal. Rainfall 97.9mm 154.9% of average and looks certain to pass 100mm with ease. Looks like we will finish around 9C as the next few days have some cool days.

With April 30th looking extremely cold, somewhere around 9.5C could be the final mark?

Sunny Sheffield down to 9C +0.8C above normal. Rainfall 106.6mm 168.7% of normal. Looking like 8.8C will be the final figure for us. If it does it'll end up a funny old month. Well below normal then even more so above normal then finally another cool spell to bring it just above normal.

How low can we go though I wonder with three rather cold April days to go and a cold start to May looking likely? And then there are corrections of course which are usually down.:unsure2:

Its one of those months where the mean value masks the truth, despite the exceptional warmth of latter part of last week, for the northern half of the UK at least maximum temps in the main have been depressed, often significant so, it has been the minimum temperatures that have been higher than average, so in feel, at least in the north it has felt a distinctly average sort of month, and quite often a little colder than normal. Conversely the southern half of the UK has seen little in the way of distinctly below average temps, though right now significantly below average temps are occuring. The length of last weeks warm spell was longer and more notable than in the north, and throughout mins have been consistently above average, so for the south it will probably be remembered as a notably milder than average month - but not in the highest echelons.

April is always out most fickle month, most prone to large extremes.

What I find odd about April is that the  hottest spells ever recorded during the month in terms of high maxima have mostly occurred during the middle third of the month and rarely occur during the last week of the month. Its happened again this year.

You look at the highest maxima date records ranked by highest temperature.

16th April

19th April

20th April

21st April

17th, 23rd, 24th, 25th April

22nd April

4th, 15th April

30th April

You would think logically that the highest temperatures ever recorded during April would be generally clustered in the last week of April but that's not the case in the record books

26 25.8 1984
27 25.6 1916
28 25.5 1984
29 25.8 1993
30 26.1 1952

The highest temperature recorded during March is 25.6C in 1968 on the 29th, that's higher than the maximum record for the 28th April.

An odd little quirk.

its amazing how a couple of  very warm days can skew the CET , its felt  decidedly chilly here for most of April, and a few days downright cold, going off the feel of the month I would have put it notably below normal, though there hasn't really been any air frosts

Yes I would agree with you, those warm days pushed it up about 1.3/1.5c, also no frosts this April, in fact night time temps have been consistently up in or close to double digits. Might get a frost tonight though.

The northern half of the UK has seen some low minima in recent nights, tonight looks very cold. A notably chilly end to April, just as it started.

As we embark along this impressive April warm spell, a couple of record may come under threat.

1: Most number of days with a CET of at least 15C - the previous record was 4 from 2011. The current forecast has us achieving a run of 5 consecutive days of at least 15C, starting today.
Over the CET record, 15C+ days occur on average just once every 5 years. The longest stretch without was 24 years, from 1902 to 1925.

2: Most number of days with a CET of at least 16C - the previous record was 3 from 1795. The current forecast has us achieving 5 days of at least 16C.
Over the CET record, 16C+ days occur on average just once every 18 years. The longest stretch without was 53 years, from 1950 to 2002.

3: Most number of days with a CET of at least 17C - the previous record was 2 from 1795. The current forecast has us achieving 3 days of at least 17C.
Over the CET record, 17C+ days occur on average just once every 82 years. The longest stretch without was 169 years, from 1776 to 1944.

4: The warmest April week on record was the final 7 days of 1795, which averaged 15.1C. The current forecast has the week of the 16th to the 22nd average 15.6C

I'll add some more as I find the time!

Looks like we got the joint record for number 4, but none of the others. The 18th and 19th are respectively down as 17.0C and 17.6C (making them second and joint fourth warmest April days on record), but all other days during the hot spell were sub-15C. The warmest week-long period was the 16th-22nd, whose mean is down as 14.5C; only 1775, 1945, 1893, and 1840 have had such periods as warm or warmer (the best 2011 managed was 14.2C for the period 19th-25th).

One other thing.

1st March 2018: fourth coldest March day ever.

19th April 2018: second warmest April day ever.

What will May bring!
