My station is reading 6.8C, which I thought was a tad high. However, I've just checked with a hand held and that reads 6.7C.

http://www.xcweather.co.uk/

is reporting between 6 and 7 across our area, so I'll go with it.

I just went to my Sainsbury's Local to get some carrots. There is no fresh veg, no frozen veg, hardly any fresh fruit, milk, pet food or chocolate.

This is just reporting the situation, it's not a complaint, because I have something much better........my first grandchild, a beautiful boy born at 2am on Friday, in the middle of the blizzard, in Somerset. I only managed to get home yesterday!

I just saw something in the Daily Mail which said that we were going to have an extreme Summer, this was apropos tons of sea creatures being washed up on Yorkshire beaches due to the sudden drop in temperature and storm force winds. Is this likely to be pure speculation or is there some indication that this might be the case?

Afternoon, not a bad day here, feeling quite warm too, sadly gone down hill into 'piddling down' territory. A37 into Bristol today still had 3ft high snow drifts in places, surprised to see coming home (after the warm day today) that they still hadn't melted a great deal. Think this heavy rain may finish them off.

Congratulations on your new grandchild of the snow.

My take:

Regarding shortages, well, I got a few things in (not excessive) well ahead of the snow arriving. Other's were less informed and I think this caused the panic buying last minute. The supermarkets order-in on a reactive basis (I think reactive to how fast items leave the shelves). It won't take too long for the supplies to start flowing again, lots of lorries were held up/laid up during the blizzards so there will be a slight backlog I would imagine. You could try driving to Gloucester to see if there is better choice.

Summer is yet to come. All we can do is look at the models, teleconnections (best left to the specialist experts to interpret), see how spring pans out first. Lots of growers are held back sowing and planting. Farmers with polly tunnels won't be too badly affected. Things like parsnips and cabbage etc should be available as they are seasonal and very hardy; those crops won't have been affected. Not sure about carrots, those might be imported. Milk: There might well have been bad interruption on supplies during the storm. Again, that should be flowing again soon one hopes.

I've shortened your post to save space Elly hope you don't mind!

Thank you for your congratulations.......I have been referring to him as a snowbaby, but I rather like "child of the snow"....... I was actually a snowbaby myself as well!

Re shortages...we'll just have to have an odd combination of food for tea. When I saw how much milk the dairy farmers were having to throw away, I did wonder if that might affect supplies for a day or two as well.

The Bath half marathon for yesterday was cancelled, but coming through Bath on the way home yesterday we saw that a lot of the runners were doing it anyway as there had been such a quick thaw along the route.

Still have some laying snow on the flat away from drifts here but the rain is hammering it now.

Expect large snow drifts to last a fair while yet.

It actually feels milder now than it did earlier and the temperature reached 7.9°C not long ago. A couole of heavy showers have followed the rain earlier this afternoon.

Would there be really wintery stuff associated with that?

Without some cold in place already, I doubt that would bring anything other than cold rain in March.

Much like it is outside at the moment!

It would be marginal that is for sure, we could be back to intensity, time of day, distance from M4, time of the month and so on.. :hi:
