More gritter activity on the main road past our house today than on most days last winter.

Whatever they thought it would do, it didn’t as what used to be a surface of clippings is now a black oily mess.

it’ll teach Lancs CC not to buy road surfacing materials from pound shops.

at least it got shut of all the grit left from last winter when it was obviously to cold to venture out.

It's been a great Summer so far but looking at this between July & August 1995 there was 33 days in a row at or above 20C, could be a tall order to achieve that again.

Very unusual on any day that the warmest place in England is in Cumbria, 2 days on the trot even more so. However, the synoptics are ideal for warmest weather in the NW quadrant of the country with the gentle easterly flow just to our south, and the region under the central core of the high.

In winter Cumbria would no doubt be recording the lowest maxima and min temps as well, as there would be major radiation cooling with no wind. Equivalent to what happened in Dec 2010.

This spell of weather is very reminiscent of late June 1995, though on the back of the warm dry May and June as a whole it feels more akin to August 1995.

Cloudy start up here with, dare I say it a coolish breeze but here comes the sun.

Couldn't agree more, Will. But I bet he'd get a stiffer sentence had he been caught with a minuscule stash of pot!

A bit chilly this early morning with a cold wind from the east knocking the temps down to 10'c at 4am, a bit too cold to be sitting out in it watching the sunrise but at least the shaded sides of the house provide some relief from the oppressive warmth this morning.

Fires still raging at Winter Hill and the winds are blowing the smoke over Chorley.  Otherwise it is nice and sunny with not a cloud in the sky.

Just under 27c here now so could be looking at 30c max later this afternoon which would be the third time this week, truly exceptional conditions for my part of the region and altitude.

other than that though fantastic conditions although the dryness is getting worrying and we’re probably looking at the last couple of days before the hosepipe ban comes in.

Today is the first day in five that we haven’t achieved 30C. It’s 28.3C out here at the moment, which is also the max for the day. Still hot, still heatwave conditions, but it feels cooler. Still, 4 days out of 5 at or above 30C (the highest being 32.5 ) isn’t bad at all!!!! Long may it continue!

More of the same today sun sun and more sun

Winter hill fire now a major emergency with the 2 separate fires merging into one. The smoke blowing across the M61 and over Chorley totally blocks out the sun, a bit eerie really.

Almost 350 firefighters from across the north are now involved in fighting the fires on Winter Hill and Saddleworth Moor and it looks like the Army may be brought in to help with the Winter Hill fire.

just hope to god that there aren’t any more incidents until these are brought fully under control although somehow I think it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

Well looking at the models, it's only going to get drier...and today there has been a desiccating wind- enhancing the evaporation process.

Small grass fire just up the hill from us has left the house stinking of smoke

thankfully it didn’t take long for the fire engines to arrive and put the damn thing out.

Selfishly i’m glad it’s a south easterly wind otherwise default setting and that lot would be over here.
