Overcast with light snow falling and a low of -5.0 C, total snow cover, not sure depth, about 2-3 cm I would say looking from upstairs!

When I actually got outside with my measuring stick it showed 5.5 cm so rounded to the odd=5cm, still snowing on and off with the temperature on -3.3 C Rare for these conditions in mid winter let alone 28 February and my 7 th consecutive air frost this morning.

A very cold night with a few clear intervals and a few light-moderate snow showers. There was also a spell of freezing fog above 300m during the early hours. Cloudy with occasional light snow showers so far this morning.

A min of  -7.2c last night was the lowest here for any month since Feb 7th 1991 when -7.7c was recorded, it was also the first  -7c since January 1993. Minima below -7c are rare here as it requires a deep and very cold air mass ( such as we have now), although they were more frequent during the late 70s and into the mid 80s. Quiet anticylonic conditions which give the lower ground their lowest temp's rarely give anything lower than -5c here as all the cold air drains into the valleys and drags in 'warmer' air from above.

At 0900

Temp; -5.6c

24 hr max; -0.5c

24 hr min; -7.2c

Grass ( snow ) min; -9.4c

Rainfall in 24 hrs ending 0900;2.2mm

Mean wind speed; 13 mph E

8 oktas Cu and St

Vis; 8 km

Light snow showers

Mean depth of lying snow; 5cm. 100% cover.

By this time tomorrow we are expected to have anything up to 25cm of snow, that will exclude the impending Blizzard tomorrow afternoon and evening. Looking at the present Radar loos like a streamer is beginning to form on the Irisih sea

Thursday 01st March 2018

Variable cloud overnight, odd light snow shower. Widespread, severe and penetrating frost. Cloudy this morning, light snow showers. Feeling bitterly cold. Bright / sunny spells, though snow showers turned frequent and heavy producing 2-3 cm covering at times, this melting in sunshine in between, except in shaded areas. Sub zero all day, and with a fresh east wind, this turning strong at times by early evening, the wind chill dropped past -10c at times. A bitterly cold day indeed for this time of year and this location, though would be very unusual at any time in winter here.

Blimey TM, I thought it was bitterly cold here, sounds like someone reporting straight out of the Arctic.

meantime in downtown sunny donny, snowing again but not blowing it at the moment. Total by early afternoon of 8 cm with drifting snow (yes even in Doncaster=never seen it before in 38 years) of a foot or so, an ice day, briefly a maximum of -0.3 C, mostly below -2 C, and the 7th consecutive air frost.

Not a beast from the east at all some folk say. Thank gawd it is late February and not late December then. The 850 mb temperature above here was shown as -14/15 C this morning.

Now I would like sunshine and day time values in the tops teens as soon as possible please.

A day of heavy snow showers which eased in the afternoon but new batch of showers coming in now. Not windy enough for blizzard conditions indeed winds are less than expected but still drifting despite this.

Max temp -2.8C, now -5.7C, Barometer 1023mb falling, Wind F4 E, rainfall 0.2mm but much more than that will have to melt it tomorrow.

Made a max of -1.6c so must be the coldest late february day since 1986.

The excitement came this afternoon when the wind picked up strong to gale force in the heavy blizzards than came.

The best part by far was the exceptional drifting, clouds spreading everywhere blizzards simple, high up dangerous to be out in.
