Need to be educated here!  Why is snow failing to settle in Chelmsford?  Just had a heavy-ish shower with large flakes but as soon as they his the ground, they melt!  The temp is around freezing and dew point must be favourable??  :cc_confused::cc_confused::unknw:

Was thinking back and a number of times circa 20 years ago we get maxes of -5C around here, though the beast from the east has been modified by comparatively warmer temps, though it has come later in the season this time.

I think the issue at the moment is the time of year. Jan '87 and Feb '91 had max temps widely sub zero with similar upper temps (in the case of Feb '91) and thicknesses.

We are virtually in March now so max temps are higher than they would have been even a few weeks earlier.

Still bitterly cold though!

Netweather showing 19cm of snow from 2100-0000 tonight - surely can't be right?!?!

Pretty sure someone mentioned sublimation - think it's more or less evapouration straight back into the air but I'm just repeating what I've read, so probably best someone who knows their stuff explains it!

Not quite as bad/good for me, 10cm expected between 3-6pm in Milton Keynes but 4 inches in an hour even seems a lot!

Exactly - don't remember much of '47, the other really cold winter but understand th difference was more of a Greenie high set up, rather than a Scandy one. That year the cold and snow did not really set in until the end of Jan but lasted until April - the comparison between that year and '63 is quite interesting  because overall there was more snow, with some considerable depths being recorded and less sunshine in '47.

Just looked at the radar and currently Watford is in a SFZ - snow free zone.   :)

It's all about radar watching now.

The wind flow is more favourable for us, however will we see another build of convection to take advantage of this? Will have to wait and see.

Que??  Do you mean it is now too cold to settle?

If that is the case, let just have spring - it is miserable.

I think the 06z GFS is encouraging for Friday / Saturday all snow event (feeling a little bit more positive than last night, especially for west London) but certainly continues with the theme of the end of cold come Sunday for the South (potentially starting with Ice rain)

** Edit : Current Conditions : there is certainly a more easterly change to the wind direction though it looks like a pretty slack pressure gradient in the south at the moment which probably doesnt help snow chances for the west of our area quite yet
