Been the coldest spell for along time don' think it' got above freezing since Tuesday. Just really disappointed it didnt snow properly never got more than a cm of snow. Want spring now and hope next year here in west Sussex we can get cold like this in December or January with a decent snowfall 3inch plus

The shorter days in winter forces me into hibernation during winter so I spend more time in here, but I agree with the highlighted bit.

Temp on the rise the last 2 hours and has crept up to -0.3(77hrsconsecutively it has been under Zero!!).Hope to take my daughter out sledging early tomorrow morning before the horrible thaw sets in and it goes all slushy.Just come back from a lovely walk in the fresh powdery snow-It was magical and so quiet

I’ve literally just got in from hours of sledging on Epsom Downs followed by a glass of wine next to the fire in the local. It was bliss! What a perfect end to the Winter. 

I only signed up late in the game, but lurked for a while, taking in all the wonderful knowledge you all provide. I impressed myself with how much I learnt, and that’s saying something. 

Gutted it’s over but looking forward to getting in the garden, seeing some sun and looking forward to some, hopefully, epic thunderstorms!

ill be around as I’m too much of a weather geek to stay away.

Evening all,

Well what a fantastic last week of Winter, that was and a fabulous start to March. This is right "up there", with some of my favourite, late Winter spells. I mentioned, in a post the other day, that I would have to include, Feb 1986, not so much for the depth of snow, it never got that deep in the Bromley, N.W.Kent area but the depth of cold, was incredible, returning a below freezing CET, for the month, incredible. Also one of my favourite late Winter spells was late Feb/early March 2005. A bit like this year, a sudden change in synoptics, occurred at roughly the same time of the month, as this year. Some of the best northern blocking, synoptics, I've witnessed, since I started looking at model runs, on the internet, in about 2003/4. I recorded, nigh on 2 weeks of falling snow, on consecutive days. Albeit, mostly in flurry form but where I lived in Bromley, we had 2 Thames Streamer events.. Don't think that number of consecutive days of snow falling, was even matched by 1962/63, incredible.

The depth of cold, in this current spell, has certainly been noteworthy. Sure, not everyone benefitted, from snowfall, this week. Twas ever the case, with the convective, streamer-type events, we've seen, for some of this week. Those areas, to the north and west of London, are going to struggle, to see snowfall, due to their distance, from a source of moisture. Although, I do remember, an event in Jan, a few years ago, when, parts of N.London and a few locations, to the north of London, , caught the tail end, of a Wash Streamer. Think there were problems, on the M11, too but the year, escapes me? 

Just heard on News24, that South-Eastern trains, have had to stop running trains through the Lewisham area, owing to passengers, getting off a train, down onto the tracks, when a train, got stuck outside, Lewisham station. Totally crazy!!

My wife and I are holed up, at her work for the night, in Chislehurst.

March can deliver more snow than the other cold months. Prepare to open your wallet <evil grin>  ...  yet March can deliver warmth!

My parting gift to this thread.

Great day. 5cm on top of what i already had. Temps all week below freezing , currently -0.5c hightest its been since monday. Still wth Snizzle..

As ive already said i will remember the spell for its deep cold..(Deep snow would have topped it )

I had 4 snow events but each only delivered 2-3cm at best. ( 5days of lying snow , not seen for 5 years)

Looked great each time though so not to dissapointed. Today was the icing on the cake wth the freezing rain ( not seen before) then topped up wth a 4 hour spell of snow.

Will i remember this Winter in 10 years time. ?? Probally !! But at the age of 45 ive seen a fair few better...

As I waved the snow goodbye this evening, I wondered when you are off storm chasing for me and my son to stay up far too late waiting for the live stream to kick in following you all. It's something we look forward to every year after winter has passed and there are no more dreams of snow to be had. 

On that subject, echoing what so many others have said, what a great cold spell it's been. I have seen falling snow every day since Monday, worn our 'Austria gear' because it is so cold outside, found out the dog really doesn't like snow and likes his 'snow coat' even less, and seen freezing rain on cars and bin lids. And of course, had snow on the ground to top it all off, with some lovely unexpected streamers and just catching the edge of the west country snow yesterday (my homeland in the Mendips got plastered). 

It's been a time of reminiscing with my son, who is 18 now, so 13 during the last proper snow, and 10 for the 2010 event, which was fabulous for us. Some of you know he has aspergers/special educational needs, so he is still in some ways a 6 year old in the body of an 18 year old, and he really misses 'old times' when it was OK for him to feel and act young, whereas now he really struggles with the complications of his evolving 'grown-up' life. The snow has instantly transported him and me back to this younger times, and today we spent hours in the woodlands in Esher tramping around in the snow just like the good old days, while yesterday we even managed to sledge down a bit of grass that had sufficient snow not to take out the whole of the bottom of it. The passing of time as shown through years between snow falls eh?

As with many others, I am here all year (and now reaching my 10th year - WOT?), but you can't beat a great winter spell for the excitement it brings. I really hope we don't have such a long wait between this one and the next

Me too, I’m an outdoors person all year though, when it’s not raining. Don’t like being stuck indoors at all. My allotment keeps me busy all year. Hopefully a nice summer to enjoy, this year.

I remember March 2005. I’d just started seeing my now wife then and we both skived off work and watched as 9 inches fell through out the day. It was then she realised she was with a weather fanatic. She still married me so it worked out ok

This spell has been fantastic. But for me nothing will ever come close to 1987. That’s the holy grail in my eyes. Living up near blue bell hill even back then we were in the firing line and ended up with 2.5 feet of snow. I was a young lad and thought that was fairly normal, especially as 4 years later we had another amazing snowfall. ?little did I realise the pain of snowless winters thereafter. everyone talking like this over, not so sure myself. we have all week the models fail to even predict snowfall accurately. that lot in channel should be going towards Plymouth as low goes north. looks like low is disrupting a bit to be and sending a shortwave east from radar. keep an eye on the eastern end of precip near Le H arve that big blob may shear into in next hour and places in Sussex/kent coast may get  bonus snowfall.
