My best winter events

1) Jan 87

2) Feb 91

3) Multiple events 79

4) Dec 10

5) Feb 09

6) Feb/Mar 18

7) Dec 81

8 ) Mar 13

Feb 86 was good too, but I was living in the west country then - it was cold but dry everywhere else.

OK, here's a quick stab at mine: 1962-63, which lasted for 3 months, with dense freezing fog in the first month, then the beast, with an occasional northern and western incursion, for nearly 3 months. Even the one or two western incursions were very cold, with snow, not rain.   I had a newspaper round, on foot. Never missed one, and i was yet to become a teen.

1965. Cold and snowy at times. Nota

Xmas eve + xmas day 1970. A cold NE had set in. Snow started at aboy 6pm of the 24th; Contned all night and well into xmaa day.

I love how on here we seem to have the snow contingent and the storm contingent, only appearing at certain time of year. And then there's, me and the other inbetweeners who hang around here all year!

And then you got the up side downers who jump  hemispheres and start again...our charts our models all use data that some people have to gather day in day out.. Hope they don't lose the excitement of will it or won't it..that would be sad :-(        ps.. there is nothing like it snowing where it hard to get....

This week has been great. I've enjoyed it but now back to reality as soon as it thaws. Tomorrow I'm going to have 6 days worth of mail to deliver, almost every house on my delivery (650) :sorry:

Just battled the drive home to Leigh from east London, very icy conditions out there, and one last heavy snow shower before we wave good bye ? what a great spell it’s been this week though!

What’s next..storm chasing? ?

Blizzard again, this is relentless, seems to be the moisture feed off the Isle Of Sheppey and keeps regenerating.

Easy had another 8cm since 4pm.

Still snowing here to and its all dry snow and doesnt want to give up.

Looking on the radar it just keep forming over the Thames.

I honestly thought this spell would carry on for 2 weeks plus with little milder bits after the mega cold had gone more like March 2013 which was great here.

A real shame as everyone is far more friendly, far less cars on the roads, kids having fun.

.I prefer to limit myself during warm months and focus on socialising outdoors with real family and friends.

I do that all year too, more indoor socialising in winter, though. There can interesting weather in the warmer months, too!

Snow long since stopped on the south coast, looks like the stuff in the channel will miss here, tempreature has risen considerably in the last few hours, it's now 0.

Tomorrow the high is forecast to be a whooping 5c, so I think it's time to get the shorts and t-shirts out!!

Defo, the kids had played out the front and left it with patches of grass and just measured, fresh new 8cm, the snow is a lot wetter which denotes its getting more marginal, hoping it just stops dead and clears for the night so sledging can ensue tomorrow

Definitely stopped here now. No matter how many times I check.

Word of warning, if you have non weather fan friends over, and they bring a bottle of champagne, don’t make the first toast ‘to the Beast from the East’ - it quite simply  has made things awkward and I’m not sure I’ll be seeing them again...

Sorry been at work. What about all that rain approaching from NW France? Will it get to us in the SE? Or will it be too warm?

Yeh, seems to have been quite patchy in places......still, we've had well over a foot of snow over the week, shame it melted a lot tuesday, but its pretty rare around these parts to have this amount of snow for nearly a week, so cant grumble whatsoever!! Looks like it'll all be gone by sunday night, but who knows!

My fav winters:

1962-63, which lasted for 3 months, with dense freezing fog in the first month, then the beast, with an occasional northern and western incursion, for nearly 3 months. Even the one or two western incursions were very cold, with snow, not rain.   I had a newspaper round, on foot. Never missed one, and i was yet to become a teen. We had no central heating, tv or phone, and the loo was --- outside. Brrrr.

Early-ish 1965. Cold and snowy at times. Also notable for the pirate radio stations, all at sea, starting to fill the airwaves.

Xmas eve + Xmas day 1970. A cold North Easterly set in by 24th. Snow started at about 6pm that day; continued all night and well into Xmas day. Nice! Big, swirling flakes on the big day. Not long after, in Jan '71, the temp got to 18C in Wales - at that time the highest ever january temperature recorded in the UK.

1978/79. The 1970s were mainly marked by mild, *very* boring wet winters and two very hot summers, but by December 1978 things had changed. The winter was grey, cold, iced up and frosty, with the odd sunny spell. Not much snow where i was except for the occasional heavy job, which was very welcome. Lots of snow grains just b4 xmas, which turned the SE white but gave way to a non white xmas. Boo. But then the cold re-started.

1981/82. Often cold and snowy. A white xmas in the south and east at least, by which time the snow had lain for weeks, and been added to.  Worth checking out.

1984/85: Great for snow. Even had a snow shower in Guildford in May '85. Check this winter out!

January 1987. Totally 100% brilliant. 3 days of the beast + snow non stop for 3 days. A winter wonderland.

Early 1991: Cold at times, with some good snow falls.

1995. Nice snow b4 xmas. Very cold spell of weather.

2009/2010. Mega.  Dittto 2010/11.

2013. The March was excellent for snow.

2018. Boring until ... now.
