Wow! If this area below the Purbecks, Dorset makes landfall here then maybe red warning maybe extended further east?

I think from watching the lunchtime forecast by ian they expect this over a larger area now anyway.

A37 through mendip is virtually impassable now I nearly lost it driving up from shepton.. time to hang my keys up for the day

Surprised MetO haven't extended the red warning, even just to cover themselves. Either confident of the track or will issue one soon.

Seems odd as there are 2off distinct areas of the heaviest stuff.

Looking at the radar again it looks as if the precipitation is strengthening on the eastern side? Is that going to swing round west though suddenly? Perhaps we may get lucky after all? It’s snowing quite nicely here blowing in a keen breeze!

Hi mate. Yes had strengthened somewhat on the eastern side, think we will get some light to moderate snow for a while at least. May extend into Nw London, time will tell. Encouraging.

Had snow falling here for about 1 1/2 hours, light to moderate flurries from time to time another 1cm or so. Drifting from previous snowfall in strong easterly winds.

    Temp -2.7c. Dewpoint -4c.

It is snowing and will not stop for hours on end. In the next few hours there will be higher winds and heavier bursts of snow. The snow will drift and visibility will reduce.

I think I'm guilty of that :)  We had a good session yesterday in Wembury and every time I look out the window it seems the same - but actually, it's getting a little bit more stormy each time!  My reference tree is sheltered from the easterly, but the wind is picking up here now. Temp has been rock steady at -3.6c for the last 2 hours.

Seems to be getting heavier here, but still quite fine flakes, need bigger flakes for a decent covering.

It has just turned into "heavy" snow now and the temp has dropped further to -5c. Just watch the area of pink, red and then "white" (really heavy snow) advancing on the radar. It is rapidly expanding in the Channel and this is still before the really severe stuff hits around 5 pm+. I think the "red warning" area will be vastly expanded any minute now. Do not worry about the green (rain) that's in the western Channel and over the less cold sea.  Those purple and even white areas in the infra red image are the thickest cloud and almost certainly the heaviest precipitation. It is that which will reach us around 1600 to 1700. Then watch the reds on the radar change to white and expand rapidly. I've lived through 8 proper blizzards since Dec 1962 and was snowed in for 5 days in Feb 1978 at my parents' hotel halfway up Dartmoor (they owned the Edgemoor Hotel from 1976 to 1987) when we had over 2 foot of level snow and 20 to 30 foot drifts. This event has all the makings of the '78 one. :)

Note that apart from higher ground in the far north of England and Scotland, we now have the lowest surface temps. I think that several spots in north Devon will not rise above -6c today. It will be amazing to think that the SW of England will smash the previous lowest maximum March temp record. The previous March record for the UK of -4.6 c was on 2nd March 2001 (at Cassley in Sutherland).

More soon + pics :)   David

Just sit back and enjoy this peeps. We chase the perfect weather synoptics for weeks and weeks and weeks and here we have it, these are absolute golden conditions for a significant event in South West/Central Southern England. I wouldn't pay much attention on snow depth charts or forecasts, its all about now-casting now. The flow is so unstable and there will be quite a few unknowns coming off of it as well as it engages with our intense cold block.  This is a nightmare to forecast.
