Not managed one yet. Coldest day was yesterday at 0.8°C - I need another 1 hour and 18 mins to save my bacon!

It’s a bit of a mess tomorrow regarding further snow.

Colder 850s are going to feed back from the ne as the low pivots and flattens out.

The models disagree on the intensity of the precip and the speed it moves north.

Just a short update. Freezing rain here too. it has formed a crust on the snow surface and that will prevent further drifting. It is incredibly dangerous as some have said. Although freezing rain or glazed frost is quite common following a snow to rain end of cold spell event they rarely last for more than an hour or so. There have been a number of more notable freezing rain events and these are then known as ice storms. Going backwards, we had them on 9.2.2012, 13.1.2010, 23.1.1996, 27.1.1940 and 18.1.1912. There may have been one or two others. The ice storm in 1940 lasted here in the south-west for over 48 hours and did immense damage. It began and ended with a blizzard. I did a report on that in a MOD post last week but there is also an archived NetWeather thread dedicated to it with several great posts. Just click on the chart below:

Let's just have one more look at several charts.                                                                           Screen shot 2210

It only seems to be freezing rain right on the south coasts of England with snow from a short distance inland.. Even with 850 temps now close to 0 c heavier precipitation can easily turn back to snow. The values are somewhere between -2c and +2c. What is needed are sub zero dew points and wet bulb temps and near to 0c surface temps with an off shore wind from the colder land mass:

I believe that some of you have been posting wet bulb readings. The temp here is still -1.5 c. I haven't remeasured the snow depth since 5 pm when it was over 15 cm and there was several more hours of snow after that. No thawing and no melting so far.

I've been up since 5 am and I'm off to bed now. I hope that we do see some more snow down here on the coast later tonight and tomorrow as Emma draws in some more east winds off the nearby continent. Good night.  David

Hmmm sounds a bit suspect to me, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s correct

cheers

Great update from Dave.

That radar seems to be showing a re-build (so to speak) over N France to head North into S England later.

Suspect tomorrow might be a good 'un.

Looking again, not quite as much in S Dorset right on the coast e.g. Purbeck 5-10cm, and seems evenly split between tonight's event and tomorrow morning's. So I suppose how much more you get depends on how long it stays as freezing rain.

Some very interesting growth to the south currently.

Circle 2 (second from left) i think is what the MetO were alluding to for the red alerts..

I assume that's just cloud thickness? Could mean anything. In york, the dark reds were over us and there was no precipitation.

Yeah 100%.

I still suspect a fair amount of PPN from the thicker stuff on the south.
