Isn’t it weird that so cold any snow that falls melts thawed straight away?

I read somewhere today that the air is so dry that the moisture is literally sucked away from the lying snow decreasing its mass to almost nothing.

The snow from 4.30/5 hasnt melted at all. And it is lovely powder snow.

Ian F forecast in a mo

I wouldn't have thought it would melt as the temp is currently -2.8c

Yep no sign  of melting and with the low temps due overnight we should have snow on the ground from now until the milder air arrives later in the weekend.... Unless of course the sun melts it tomorrow lol

Pretty sure dry air can cause the snow to evaporate! Nothing to do with temps etc

Bugger me, it's -2.3!

It took until midnight to reach that last night.

It’s -2.3 / feels like -3.9 here already, wasn’t that cold when I went to bed last night either. :cold:

I love how the graphics showed the snow continuously backbuilding once it hit the West Country, never actually clearing until later on Friday.

A positive but uncertain forecast with no real facts ascertained at this early stage.

Good forecast but

It is 36 hours to kick off - anything could happen. A slight westward correction would see many of us receiving 'the scraps'.

Looked good didn't it, snow for nearly 24hrs. Strange though that he said 5-10cm widely. Would have thought there would be way more than that.

Got 1-2cm from a shower just now.

I'll ignore the forecast for later on in the weekend/next week:sorry:

I think it is called snow sublimation where moisture from the snow is extracted straight into the air without turning to water first. I stand to be corrected if I haven't explained this very well!

Too be honest, I think he was rushed a bit so just gave some quick broadbrush values to cover the whole region.

Still uncertainty on how far north and west the first system will track.

Going to be a nervy 48hrs I think.
