Went to the Pennines in the end. Should have gone to Teesdale, but there wasn't time, so settled for Weardale. Couple of shots...

Here you go... I ventured fully out. 27991638_1593131500722016_1995411088115499008_n.mp4

Amazing view from mine right now moon and an angry orange sky!

looking at the current radar you'd have to be pretty unlucky to miss a decent covering any where in the region tonight!

I'm currently just on the southern fringe of a pretty big shower and its just started snowing here:)

Your location looks great for snow showers.

Showers look to be merging when they make landfall.  The wind is really getting up now.  There will be plenty of roads blocked tonight, especially on high ground.

A couple of streamers setting up, but look to be heading in to the borders.

Possibility I might be getting the first heavy snow shower of this cold spell in the next hour

I wonder why the showers seem to be dieing as they head towards my location but I guess so far met office are spot on with the warnings.

Hi all I’m driving to Newcastle airport at 2;30am in the morning from Thornaby for my 7am flight ; I know there is plenty of snow about but reckon this be plenty enough time? And any tips on routes to use to get there with the weather as it is?

many thanks for any replies in advance

That could be quite tricky and the timing of the flight co insides with the heaviest snowfall time. Good luck.:)

It would always normally be A19>A689>A1>A696 but i've had some hairy moments in the snow on the A689 around Butterwick, that could be tricky in the dead of night if it gets a good dumping. The rest should be relatively clear.

I agree you're better off coming up the A19 and coming off the A1231 through Washington to the A1.  Stick to the main routes and you'll have a better chance.

It really is a losing battle trying to keep roads clear. I've been out countless times gritting and even puddles are getting completely covered. The A692 is white and looking quite icy now, could be tricky for the 5am drive to work ?

In all seriousness, can anyone tell me why this is all grains and whether it will be flakes at some point?

For the past 90 minutes, as I suspected in my post earlier, the snow showers have been heavy, frequent, and in all honesty, absolutely fantastic. I love convective snow/snow showers, arguablybthis os my favorite type of weather.

Agreed - if it’s work I’d set off early. If it’s a holiday I’d be booking into an airport hotel. They hardly ever close a runway , traffic is another matter

We were all grains earlier but the last couple of bands have had flakes the size of fists, laid bloody quickly too. Hopefully some of it moves your way.

Not sure I'm up to watching everywhere else get plastered while Durham gets all the insignificant crap tbh.

Had a god 15-20 mins shower just now. Was driving from Middlesbrough to South Bank via A66 and it was proper chucking down with strong winds! Made the drive quite tricky.

Look at how the showers are developing from about 10 miles inland.  In the pics you see time snaps from the radar.  Red dot is me that completely missed the shower, but look at how it suddenly appeared and then intensified
