Skies are looking very convective here towers going up and big rain drops randomly falling. Cape is over 700 so anything that goes up could go thundery

Updated warning for heavy rain on Friday

00:00 Fri 9 23:59 Fri 9

A band of heavy rain followed by heavy showers or thunderstorms has the potential to bring disruption.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

A band of heavy rain, with the possibility of some very heavy bursts, will move northwards during Thursday night and Friday. Within this band 10-15 mm is widely expected, however some places could see as much as 30 mm in just a few hours. Once the rain has cleared scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop, particularly during Friday. Many places will miss these, but where they do occur 10-20 mm is possible in one hour, with perhaps 30 mm in a few hours.

Yellow warning for Thunderstorms issued for Saturday

0:00 Sat 10 23:59 Sat 10

Slow-moving heavy, thundery showers on Saturday may produce some torrential downpours which could cause disruption to travel and flooding.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater or lightning strikes
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater and there is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

Heavy, and occasionally thundery showers, are expected to develop during Friday evening or night and continue through Saturday. Whilst many areas will miss the worst of these thundery showers, a few spots could see 15-25 mm within an hour and 30-40 mm within 3 hours. These heavy showers will tend to ease during Saturday evening and night.

Is this all going to be a damp squib in the NE.
Lots of events cancelled but rain has been rather trivial so far and worst winds are further south.
Its Whitby Regatta weekend I bet that goes ahead with few issues.
I think the problem is decision have been made on general info several days before due to need to publicise closures.

Latest GFS showing 3 to 4 inches of rain across the area within the next couple of days,so warnings could well be upgraded.

Nice thunderstorm just passed though frequent lightning and torrential rain first direct hit in ages. Some great folk lighting and loudest thunder I've heard in a while

I don't think it was applicable to North Yorkshire but it has been remarkable how the rain has been literally ten miles or less to the north all day.
With increasing wind it has actually dried up quite a bit but got gradually cooler and only fleeting glimpses of sun.

Security camera footage has emerged from Arkengarthdale end of July

Just watched this for the first time - absolutely dreadful conditions and its obvious that much more extensive damage is occurring somewhere out of the picture.  Not a scene you want to witness at any time but certainly not in August.  I hope they managed to salvage some of the bales and that their livestock were safe.

After a hot weekend we have a chance of thunder this afternoon and evening as the breakdown begins

Headline:

Fine start. Increasingly cloudy, with thundery downpours possible later.

Today:

Fine start, with plenty of warm sunshine. Cloud then increasing during the afternoon, with heavy and thundery showers developing. These bringing the risk of some blustery and torrential downpours, and perhaps the odd spot of hail. Maximum temperature 25 °C.

Tonight:

Heavy, thundery showers easing away through the evening, will all parts dry by midnight. Clear spells follow, before cloud thickens again by dawn, with further showery outbreaks of rain likely. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

Running both sides of us here but I can do without torrential rain in the night.
Can hear distant rumbles and see the odd flash to the east especially.

Risk of first frost in places tonight, it's 6.3C here already , Met Office say minimum of 6C at 6am so likely to get colder than that.

A very autumnal day in the region today with persistent light rain and drizzle it felt quite chilly for early September

Looking better for the 2nd half of the week with temps back into the upper teens or maybe even low 20s
