What is everybodys thoughts on today. i remember July 2016 we had a level 2 over the region but it was a complete bust so hopefully that doesnt repeat its self today and we see some Supercells. Current temp at 10am 25c DP 18c,

10.55am 27.1c

As always just radar watching the ingredients are there but will be hit and miss. Very refreshing breeze here on the coast must be a good 6-7 degrees cooler than 5 miles inland. Redcar beech resembles the Costas today

Guest Durham Weather

The official Durham Uni Observatory Met site topped out at 32.8 deg, which is just shy of it’s all time record of 33.6 degC which has stood since 16th July 1876. My Gilesgate Durham station reached a phenomenal 33.7 degC this afternoon. That is however a garden site, so is more sheltered than the official station. Still amazing.

Oooosh, 32.8 at Durham is almost unprecendented - it really struggles to ever top 30c in the good old NE!

I used to have a personal weather station in Newton Aycliffe - sadly it died a couple of years ago and the best temperature I recorded was 30.8 a few years ago - and during the 2006 heatwave I got 30.3c. So this is a new level altogether.

I've been looking at some of the Durham County weather/traffic cams today - best temperature I saw was Bradbury (near Sedgefield) at 33.7c. They use Vaisala instruments so you can count on those figures really. Even Consett hit 31.2 and Tow Law 30.2!

Updated heavy rain warning from 9am Saturday until 3pm Sunday

Heavy rainfall may lead to flooding in a few places and travel disruption.

What to expect

  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing dangerous conditions

Reason for update

To expand the warning area and an earlier start time.

An area of rain is expected to move slowly and erratically northwestwards across parts of the UK on Saturday and Sunday, and while some places within the warning area may see very little others could see several hours of heavy rain. Accumulations of 40-60mm are possible, with perhaps as much as 80-100mm in places, especially over high ground.

Several noisy thundery cells have passed very close they are more right on the coast now.
Moving through quite rapidly but could easily catch you out as they approach fast too!
One heavy burst of rain about 1mm.

Rain nearly passed through now, it all looks a little more west on the radar than those images Gav

Just short of 15mm here but it has stopped and unlikely to be much more.
Coming in from outside at 15C the house (23C) feels like a sauna despite open windows.

Updated rain warnings

09:00 Today to 23:59 Today

Heavy rainfall may lead to flooding in a few places and travel disruption.

What to expect

  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing dangerous conditions

Reason for update

To remove Northern Ireland and parts of south-east Scotland and Northumberland from the warning area for Saturday, but to extend a little further north in Scotland, whilst ceasing this warning at the end of Saturday (however, please see separate warning for Sunday).

A band of rain is expected to affect the area during Saturday. While some places within the warning area may see very little rain others could see several hours of heavy rain. Accumulations of 20-40 mm are possible, with perhaps as much as 50 mm in a few places.

_____________________________________________________

00:00 Tomorrow to 23:59 Tomorrow

Heavy rain may lead to flooding in a few places and travel disruption.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses

A band of rain will affect the area through Sunday, becoming heavy at times, with the added risk of isolated thunderstorms developing across northern England and south-west Scotland during the afternoon and evening. There remains some uncertainty in the location of the rain-band, so some places may see very little rain, but others could catch several batches of heavy rain. 20-30 mm may fall within 2-3 hours, with 40-60 mm in a few locations through the day. Also, there is a small chance of 40 mm falling within an hour from any thunderstorms that develop in the afternoon and evening over northern England and south-west Scotland.

  • Northumberland
