Yellow thunderstorm warning issued for tonight

18:00 Today 23:59

Thunderstorms may affect parts of northern England and southeast Scotland this evening

What to expect

  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes or hail

Although many places will miss the worst, thunderstorms seem likely to develop across parts of northern England and southeast Scotland later on Saturday, perhaps focused towards eastern coasts. Lightning strikes, hail and gusty winds are possible, while 20 to 30 mm of rain may fall within an hour in a few locations.

Thunderstorm warning issued for Thursday

12:00 Thu 11 to 21:00 Thu 11

Heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some travel disruption and flooding in places during Thursday afternoon and evening.

What to expect

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater and lightning strikes
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop during Thursday afternoon across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England. Whilst many areas will miss the heaviest rain, where heavy showers and thunderstorms do develop they will be slow-moving bringing the potential for 20-30 mm of rain in an hour and 40-50 mm in 2-3 hours. Showers and thunderstorms will gradually die out during Thursday evening.

Torrential rain roads are like rivers in places but no thunder. Good to see some potent convection though bodes well for this afternoon.

Missed that again, have last field of hay just ready to bale but today the damp wind off the sea and drizzly patches earlier mean it's just not quite dry enough - but sun has broke through the past half hour when it's too late to realistically do much.

Yellow warning for thunderstorms issued from 6pm today until 9am tomorrow

Scattered thunderstorms moving north tonight and early Wednesday could lead to some power cuts and travel delays.

What to expect

  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • There is a small chance of damage to property from lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of a few homes and businesses likely, leading to some damage to buildings or structures
  • There is a small chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of south-west and southern England this evening, moving north quickly across the UK overnight, clearing Scotland and eastern England by mid-morning on Wednesday. Although some places will miss the thunderstorms altogether, where they do occur there is the potential for frequent lightning, hail and gusty winds, as well as sudden downpours in a few places.

About 10mm overnight but not exactly torrential, strong gusty wind as the squall line went through.
I only noticed one big flash and rumble having been woken up by wind buffeting through window, no doubt there were more

Torrential rain for a short time around 4am with some thunder in the distance

The storms looked to be more widespread than forecast by the models

Just touched 31C here, previous recorded high was 30C (1st July 2015) - but August 2003 was definitely hotter than that.
