Yellow warning for snow and ice

Between 12:00 Sat 15th and 10:00 Sun 16th

Heavy snow and blizzards may develop across Scotland and northern England with a risk of freezing rain in places.

What to expect

  • Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
  • Some rural communities could become cut off
  • Power cuts may occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
  • A chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Bus and train services may be delayed or cancelled, with some road closures and longer journey times possible
  • Untreated pavements and cycle paths might be impassable because of black ice

Further details

There is a risk of snow developing with strong southeasterly winds affecting northern UK on Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning. The snow could be heavy at times, especially over hills where blizzards may develop, and is likely to drift in strong winds. Across northern England and southern Scotland, snow may turn to freezing rain above 200-300 metres leading to widespread ice developing on Saturday night. 2-5 cm of snow is likely at lower levels, whilst higher ground could see 10-20 cm.

So were back for the winter season merry go round.

I think these warnings will be some what different come Saturday. My guess is it will be a hilly affair and the people low down like my self will see the odd snow flake mixed in with the freezing cold rain.

As always though they could be right and we can have a couple of hours fun in the snow before it melts.

Fully out of hibernation now...

Just in time for this weekends snow risk.

For now all areas away from the east coast likely to see a few hours of snow Saturday from 6-9pm giving accumulations.

Ground above 250m will likely see snow for several hours giving some 5-15cm.

Indeed, even Christmas time looking interesting too. But January into Feb look a good chance for prolonged cold spell due to potential SSW and vortex split

Yes, a high likelihood most of the region will see snow on Saturday, it will be heavier and longer lasting in Cumbria, but the cold air will hang on longer in the NE, a snowy afternoon in the west, and a snowy evening in the east.

Amber Ice warning issued for tomorrow

Between 10:00 Sat 15th and 06:00 Sun 16th

Freezing rain is expected to result in the rapid development of widespread ice, with very dangerous travelling conditions likely.

What to expect

  • Injuries from slips and falls and danger to life on icy surfaces are likely
  • Black ice may form quickly affecting bus, train and air travel
  • Dangerous driving conditions are likely leading to road traffic collisions, road closures and longer journey times
  • Pavements and cycle paths likely to become instantly impassable because of the sudden formation of black ice
  • Power and other services, such as telephone and mobile phone coverage, likely to be interrupted or cut

Further details

Heavy freezing rain is expected to develop during Saturday. This will result in the rapid formation of widespread ice on roads, pavements, trees and other structures. Freezing rain is rare in the United Kingdom but when it does occur the impacts can be very severe. This is due to the fact that it can form very quickly, it can be difficult to see and is incredibly slippery. Some sleet and snow is possible over the very highest ground and the freezing rain may also be followed by a spell of sleet and snow as the precipitation clears from the west. The freezing rain and sleet and snow will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds which will pose an additional hazard to travel, in particular over high ground.

The main concern is Freezing rain tomorrow, but snow still likely but may be more confined to higher ground but to lower levels later possibly.

Will be an interesting day to say the least and vary from one place to another.

The Christmas period and beyond is looking very interesting as well.

Looking at the temperatures higher up they dont get much above freezing for many parts inland tomorrow until after 9pm so can see more places seeing snow than rain.

Dew points at or below freezing too.

The layer of warmer air only 0 - 2.c max
