A break in the rain for now in Darlo more on the way this will increasingly fall at higher levels through the evening as the milder air moves north

Another pulse of very heavy rain now working it's way into the region from the southwest.

Just had a few intense downpours here, this will only add to flooding issues with combined snow melt from earlier snow and more rain this week to start with.

All in all, pretty poor start to April!

No sign of spring warmth up here either with temperatures around average.

The milder air is continuing to move north slowly but surely just over 7c in Darlo still only around 4c in Newcastle

Temps probably the wrong side of marginal at lower levels though some wet snow couldn't be ruled out

It did feel much milder in hazy sunshine today between showers.

Yet another wet day ahead, heavy rain this morning followed by heavy showers and some thunderstorms.

Rain moving back south along with colder air tonight bringing hill snow for a time.

Yellow warning

  • Darlington
  • Durham
  • Gateshead
  • Hartlepool
  • Middlesbrough
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • North Tyneside
  • Northumberland
  • Redcar and Cleveland
  • South Tyneside
  • Stockton-on-Tees
  • Sunderland

Rain & snow

Between 12:00 Wed 4th and 23:59 Wed 4th

Heavy rain and hill snow is expected.

What to expect

  • Spray and flooding on some roads along with snow, mostly on higher routes, will probably give difficult driving conditions and make journey times longer
  • Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer
  • Flooding of a few homes and business is likely

Further details

An area rain over northern England and southern Scotland will persist here for much of Wednesday with some heavy bursts likely. This will fall as snow at times, mainly on higher ground and more so during Wednesday afternoon and evening, with accumulations of 2-4 cm possible above 200 m with up to 8 cm above 300 m. Some wet snow is possible to low levels at times but accumulations are not expected here. Conditions are expected to improve over parts of northern England during Wednesday afternoon but then some heavy and perhaps thundery showers will form before the main area of rain and hill snow pushes southeastwards on Wednesday evening. Around 10-20 mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely across the area, and some parts could see 30 mm or so. The heavy showers over northern England could give very locally 20 mm of rain in 2 to 3 hours. As this rain clears southeastwards clearer conditions will spread in from the northwest with a few icy patches possible in places.
