I disagree, with persistant heavy ppn. Evaporative cooling will aid snow getting down to lower levels across most of the region.

This will really struggle to settle on ground below around 150m.

Afternoon met office update

Saturday:

A cold and wet day is forecast with periods of occasionally heavy rain, likely to fall as snow on the higher hills. Strong northeast winds will persist, especially near coasts. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Early frost Sunday then isolated wintry showers and bright spells. Sleet and snow will spread north Monday, giving accumulations on hills, then turning to rain and clearing north on Tuesday.

Monday looking very snowy, this will be long lasting falling snow as the front slows and stalls over us.

Temps will really struggle in places and i expect many will have a white easter.

Coastal areas and areas adjacent to east coast more likely to have rain along with low lying areas later as milder air creeps in.

Snow of the wet sticky variety, so some nice scenes for some hilly areas.

Thin slushy covering of snow on some surfaces here this morning.

Same here just down the road, bit of a slushfest apart from grass. DAY 37 of snow, I'm counting it ❄⛄❄

Your very bullish Gav. As a Gardner I hope so but I've lost far too many green beans at end of May to take your word for it. Any snow from tomorrow will take us to 6 continuous months of snow so I would expect the tide to turn but will keep the seedlings and shoots indoors for a good few more weeks I think.

Aye I won't be putting any seeds outside directly yet with the risk of frosts continuing for a good few weeks yet

My phone app uses meteogroup I believe which show more risk of snow next weekend. Even the automated advert going for snow boots and thick coats ❄

I thought it was meteogroup, but have just double checked and it's meteored. Has been pretty good over the last few months. Will be interesting to keep an eye on. The app is called weather 14 days and has quite a good widget, uses a combination including ECMWF

Updated snow warning

Covers

  • Durham
  • Northumberland
Reason for update

This warning has been updated to be extended across more of Scotland, and removed from Wales.

Between 03:00 Mon 2nd and 23:45 Mon 2nd

Heavy snow is expected over parts of England and Scotland, especially for high ground.

What to expect

  • There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel
  • There is a small chance that some rural communities could become cut off, mainly across the northern Pennines and Scottish Borders
  • There is a chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected

Further details

As a weather system moves in from the south and comes up against cold air over the UK, rain will turn to heavy snow in places. Several cm of snow are possible, mainly over ground above around 200 m, with drifting in strong winds. The greatest risk of medium impacts is across the northern Pennines and Scottish Borders where there is a chance of around 10 cm of snow accumulating. There is also the possibility of a few cm of wet snow gathering locally at lower levels. The snow is likely to be affecting southern parts of the warning area in the early hours of Monday before reaching Scotland later in the morning. Snow is likely to gradually turn to rain across the southern Pennines later on Monday. At present there is still some uncertainty in exact snow amounts, and how quickly snow will turn back to rain again in the south of the warning area.

Home from the lakes.

Was sleet/snow this morning over there, nothing heavy. Then started snowing around highest point on A66, again nothing heavy and only settling on highest hills. Then just heavy rain with a little sleet in heavy bursts for rest of journey home.

Temp ranged from 1c to 5c with it only 3c at home.

Looking at GFS the mild air will make steady progress to our region during the day on Monday reaching the south of the region by mid-afternoon

50 to 100m will make a huge difference tomorrow, especially from late morning onwards for those who see snow and those who see rain.

Best chance of falling snow for most will be early morning.

Settling snow for high ground above 200-250m

Doc, do you mean tomorrow, or Monday mate?

I was under the impression it was arriving overnight/ early morning Mon. Not being picky, just have out of touch with the models last couple of days and I am due to go fishing Monday. Ml

Tomorrow mate, the morning will see a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. This of the showery nature.

This falling as sleet and snow more readily during the early hours and may give slight covering on high ground above 250m

Colder air now moving over the region.

Mondays snow now looking more likely to be restricted to high ground with many places east of peninnes seeing a brief spell of sleet/snow as it moves up from thr south.
