Updated warnings

Between 00:05 Mon 19th and 10:00 Mon 19th

Ice on roads, pavements and cycle paths is likely either where melted snow refreezes or where further wintry showers occur, these mainly in the east of England and Scotland. This increases the risk of accidents, as well as injuries due to falls.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

After a very cold day on Sunday, temperatures are likely to fall well below freezing across much of the country into the start of Monday. This will lead to any melted snow refreezing, whilst coasts exposed to the northeasterly wind will continue to see further wintry showers at times, these falling onto subzero surfaces.

The previous warnings for all day today and tomorrow remain unchanged

Had some heavy hail showers this morning after some light snow showers.

More gaps between showers but these more heavy than earlier. Accumulations will be temporary at low levels so will have to wait till the evening for snow to accumulate.

Also a band of more intense and persistant snow showers develope over the region later tonight.

Yes mainly polystyrene showers so far today. But if the good Doctor says more snowier this evening then that’s good enough for me.

That wind is biting again today though!

Yes this is bloody impressive. Visibility looks very poor.

Just a shame the March sunshine is working fast. If we get these showers after dark though it will be fun.

Updated yellow warning for tomorrow

Between 00:05 Sun 18th and 23:55 Sun 18th

Snow showers are likely to continue throughout Sunday, with an increased chance that longer spells of snow will affect some areas. Southern and eastern regions look most vulnerable overnight and early on Sunday and then southwestern areas of England and south Wales into the daytime. Separate Amber warnings are in force for those areas most likely to see disruption. Any heavier snow will become largely confined to southwest England through the day. There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel. Damage to trees or other structures increases the chance that power cuts could occur, especially over southern and southwestern parts of England. There is a small chance that some rural communities could become cut off. Icy surfaces increase the risk of accidents and injuries. Significant wind chill and drifting will be added factors, especially over hills.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A second dose of unusually cold air will be in place across southern Britain, bringing with it the risk of snow for many. Amounts of snow will be variable, but typically 1 to 4 cm in northern areas and 3 to 8 cm further south. Greater amounts will occur locally, mostly covered by the Amber warnings.

Well this morning it snowed, it landed (as my kids used to say) and it melted...really windy out there now though. I'm not leaving the house today so the weather can do as it pleases.

The ground is absolutely saturated here, there is surface water everywhere and my garden has mini lakes in it so I'm amazed the snow lay this morning

The south of the region looks to have had the pick of the showers over the last 2 hours, but showers now starting to intensify further North too......

Showers starting to clump together now nicely in north sea, better chance of more people seeing some snow next few hours.

Lol spoke to soon! It's a shame we can't see further out on the radar as the showers are moving through so quickly, there is just a conveyor belt of them but hard to guess what may be coming our way even one hour from now. Also, if you look closely you can see a lot of the showers shrink and become less intense just before making land, or is it my eyes? Lol
