If there's an item on Look North tomorrow about a frustrated dad having gone insane and trying to dig himself a path to Old Trafford to watch the FA Cup game with his son... you'll know exactly who it is.

I have a friend in manchester today and he travelling back tomorrow morning...

You can both dig a path and meet half way

More serious note, you should been fine. A66 and high part of M62 will have snow but cant see it causing problems on roads.

Amber warnings issued further south we remain under yellow warnings

Saturday

sat.thumb.png.d995cb6c66f28099e0094b9c362920f0.png

Between 00:05 Sat 17th and 23:55 Sat 17th

A band of rain will turn more widely to snow early Saturday morning followed by scattered snow showers through the remainder of the day. These showers may become more prolonged, particularly during the evening. Any melting of lying snow will lead to an ice risk on untreated surfaces on Saturday morning and night. Travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel is possible. Some rural communities could become cut off and power cuts may occur. Some injuries from slips and falls are possible on icy surfaces. This warning has been updated to extend the area further west across central England and just into northeast Wales. Please also see the embedded Amber warnings for those areas considered most at risk from disruption.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A band of snow will move slowly south through Saturday morning, followed by snow showers. Accumulations of 1-3 cm quite widely. Over higher ground above 200 metres, 5-10 cm is possible. Strong easterly winds will lead to drifting of snow. Marked wind chill will be another feature of the weather.

Sunday

sun.thumb.png.c69f1261f597b126d505abb0964278da.png

Between 00:05 Sun 18th and 23:55 Sun 18th

Snow showers are likely to continue throughout Sunday, with a chance that longer spells of snow may affect southern regions for a time on Sunday. There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel. There is a chance that power cuts could occur. There is a small chance that some rural communities could become cut off. Icy surfaces may increase the risk of accidents and injuries. Significant wind chill will be another factor. This warning has been updated to slightly adjust the western boundary westwards. Note also that Amber warnings have been issued for areas currently considered most likely to see greater impacts.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Not all places will see snow showers but where they do occur they may be organised into bands, resulting in locally 3 to 6 cm accumulating. Some melting of lying snow is expected during the middle of the day. There is a lower likelihood that more widespread falls of 5 to 10 cm may affect parts of the region, with 10 to 20 cm on hills. Ice and significant wind chill will be further hazards.

Got the feeling this region is going to do very well Saturday and Sunday. Met Office 5 day forecast has significantly upgraded just now for my neck of the woods. Heavy/light snow between 6am and 1pm tomorrow then heavy light snow Saturday evening into Sunday. Bring it on!

Saturday night is most prone risk of significant accumulations for some.

Be interseting to see next euro 4 run.

This is the 06z for saturday night showing those heavy snow showers affecting yorkshire becoming more widespread and moving north...

Would not take much for these to form in bands and us to be in firing line.

Expect more updated warnings tomorrow

Safe to say that even if we get there, I think we'll struggle to get back that night. Hotel looks a better idea and then travel on Sunday afternoon back to the NE.

Afternoon update from the met office

Saturday:

Bright but bitter, with icy surfaces possible as raw winds bring in scattered blustery snow showers throughout. Snow accumulation should be most significant on hills, with blizzards and drifting here. Maximum temperature 1 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Very cold initially, with some further blustery snow showers and raw easterly winds. Gradual improvement is likely from Monday: becoming more settled but with overnight frosts remaining likely.

+1.4C here with with quite sudden change to wet snow.
Not settling here but hills are slightly white.
It has managed to rain lightly all day and much the same yesterday, everywhere is awash, though only about 15mm the two days.

*Public service announcement*

If anyone wants to avoid the snow, come to Newcastle Upon Tyne.

After our previous beast from the east turned into the mouse from Brockley Whins, I am personally convinced that Newcastle is exerting a magnetic force which violently repels all snow.
