It's still -0.8 here but with less wind and bright sky now those flurries are through, dark surfaces are dripping.
The forecast rather slow thaw will be a good thing when ground is frozen and snow drifted deep in places, very unusual torrents can develop.
Drainage is blocked or diverted on roads lined with deep drifts, same with interceptor grids along driveways etc.

Still light snow here and intensifying a little but right on the back edge now.

Slight thaw here too, notice the shrinkage on house roofs.

I have to say that this winter has been exceptional for the amount of snowfalls here, spread out from November to now March.  I have lost count.   None of them have been much depth here, with the maximum being 4" depth from Monday night.

The amount of snowfalls from westerly approaching fronts has to be a record here.  Normally we get nothing this side of the pennines, but I have been surprised about 5 times this winter

Also the amount of frosts must be up there with the most in the last 20 years.

Not kept any of this data.  Does anyone have any?

Have to agree with your summary of this winter, I've lost count the number of times I've had to scrape frost, ice or snow from the car. This week has been personaly disappointing with the amount of snow that fell compared to other parts of the region , I have had snow falling each day since monday, with the temp. barely ever rising above freezing and its still snowing lightly here. i still have enjoyed my lamp post/radar/forum watching this week:)

Well that was the week that was.  Hopefully we all enjoyed without any undue disruption.  Kids had wed/thur/fri as snow days whilst I schlepped off to work.

So fantastic to take them sledging today whilst some whispy snow fell.  Amazing how the weather can bring us all together and have a great time.

Met office afternoon forecast

This Evening and Tonight:

It will remain generally cloudy and breezy, with outbreaks of mostly light snow continuing overnight and widespread icy stretches developing. As the night progresses the snow is likely to increasingly turn to sleet at low levels and along the coast. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Sunday:

Cloudy and breezy, and gradually it will become slightly milder with outbreaks of snow becoming confined to high ground, with rain and sleet at lower levels. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Becoming milder and less windy. Some spells of rain, these possibly turning to sleet over the hills, interspersed with clearer intervals. This gives a risk of icy stretches overnight.

Updated ice warning

  • Darlington
  • Durham
  • Gateshead
  • Hartlepool
  • Middlesbrough
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • North Tyneside
  • Northumberland
  • Redcar and Cleveland
  • South Tyneside
  • Stockton-on-Tees
  • Sunderland

Between 20:45 Sat 3rd and 11:00 Sun 4th

Icy stretches will continue to be likely on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths during the rest of Saturday onwards into Sunday. In addition some snow is likely at times, although away from higher ground in Wales, eastern Northern Ireland, the Midlands and northern England amounts are likely to be small. However, further snow is not expected across southern parts of England. Driving conditions may become difficult and there is an increased chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. The warning has been updated to extend the yellow area southwards across remaining parts of southern England where further ice may form at times overnight following a daytime thaw.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A combination of low temperature and surfaces being wet from rain, sleet or snow and a partial thaw of lying snow will lead to icy stretches affecting untreated surfaces. Meanwhile, a further 1-2 cm of snow will affect some places whilst over higher ground in Wales, eastern Northern Ireland, the north and west Midlands and the Pennines several cms of snow are likely.

The snow seems much more marginal looking at what has accumulated on the windscreen.

Been all snow here from start to finish , though most of it light. Left probably a cm of fresh snow here, we did miss the heaviest bits so some places may of had a few cms as per metoffice yellow warning.

Next band to move up will be more marginal, with rain/sleet becoming more likely on lower ground as warmer air mixing out cold air in place.
