been cooped up with the flu most of this week which has limited my enjoyment of the spell. 16cm here in ne38 compared to 42cm on december 3 2010, and 34cm in january 2010, and with less prolonged cold/snow and less extremes also, but a notable spell nonetheless. definitely the best since 2010. as with the nature of most showers, there's a lot of local disparity and so travelling a few miles north or south would provide better depths for sure. there's just something i appreciate much more about cold spells before the new year than those afterwards

with uppers below -10c for about 5 days straight now, and colder ssts, i'd imagine that this has been a memorable week for the immediate coast in terms of snow falling and lying

 The road is still blocked at one end.  JCB has been working all day.   When I left the showers started again and so did the drifting.

Coming up from North Tyneside I noticed that once past Cramlington there was a marked change in the snow depth.  Amazing the difference 7 miles can make

 

The pic below of me standing on a drift.  Its about 8ft high.  That is the hedge you can see sticking up in the background

Still snowing here albeit light and grapple like, before our main event on Tue. But takes my tally to day 31, only 2 days lower than the whole of UK average so suspect the average, uk wide, has been well surpassed since only November.

Ice ring outside this morning very treacherous on untreated surfaces, weak band of snow pushing north might give a dusting or worse might fall as rain which will make it even more icy

Very light snow/grains here all morning, not doing anything as you have to strain your eyes to see it sometimes.

Looked out to see the tiniest snow grains falling, they are similar to dust particles. I am guessing convection is being killed off by the front just to the south of the region.

Tomorrow will see a mix of rain, sleet and snow (the snow mostly over high ground) as the less cold air from the south makes its way up here

Morning update from the met office

Today:

Less windy and less cold than of late, but staying largely cloudy with further mainly light snow. However, the snow will gradually become more intermittent and patchy. The highest temperatures will be along the coast. Maximum temperature 2 °C.

Tonight:

Generally cloudy and breezy, with outbreaks of mostly light snow and widespread icy stretches. Later the snow may turn to sleet at low levels and along the coast. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Sunday:

Generally cloudy and breezy, but also gradually becoming slightly milder with the patchy light snow gradually becoming limited to high ground, while turning to sleet or rain at lower levels. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Less windy and less cold than of late, however, there remains a risk of some further spells of rain and sleet, with snow mainly on hills, leading to icy stretches.

I think tomorrow morning could give some a good spell of snow before slightly less cold air arrives.

All depends on timing of front moving north and where heaviest ppn ends up.

Yellow Ice warning

Between 11:00 Sat 3rd and 11:00 Sun 4th

Icy stretches will continue to be likely on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths during the rest of Saturday onwards into Sunday. In addition some snow is likely at times, although away from higher ground in Wales, eastern Northern Ireland, the Midlands and northern England amounts are likely to be small. As a result, driving conditions may become difficult and there is an increased chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A combination of low temperature and surfaces being wet from rain, sleet or snow and a partial thaw of lying snow will lead to icy stretches affecting untreated surfaces. Meanwhile, a further 1-2 cm of snow will affect some places whilst over higher ground in Wales, eastern Northern Ireland, the north and west Midlands and the Pennines several cms of snow are likely.

Doesn't feel quite as cold now that wind has eased right down very light snow currently moving north hardly any intensity to it away from the Pennines

Updated met office forecast tomorrow shows heavy rain from around 9am to 1pm in Darlo could be very icy for a time as it falls onto the cold ground

My location which is not very far away shows completely different....

And only a couple of hours ago showed snow all morning till lunchtime!!!

I think it will be a very wintry mix tomorrow with some decent accumulations of snow higher ground with some low ground seeing some snow for a time.

Any heavier ppn will lead to snow level falling.

Bet you are searching for some spring warmth now??

How did you guess

Although not spring warmth next week will be less cold which is likely to see a thaw kicking in the next issue could be river flooding as the snow melt from high ground works through the system in the coming weeks

Going to be difficult to get out and about to see the drifts given the forecast.

Hate travelling up the A1 on a Saturday, but the Pennines look like getting some snow today... tomorrow looks way too snowy up there to travel, whilst the rain might do for the drifts north of Newcastle...

Currently thinking it might be better to head up into the Pennines on Monday day.
