This radar goes further out in to the north sea than the netweather radar, clearly shows showers building up out at sea.

Wind directions should turn back easterly by tea time too :)

Aye - the edge of that activity could be showing its hand here.

This is shown on the GFS.  Comparison between 9am and by 6pm wind has changed to Due East and strengthened.

NE forecast from the met office

Today:

Bitterly cold, with some sunny intervals but also further large snow accumulations from frequent and often heavy snow showers moving in from the North Sea. Winds easing a little later on. Maximum temperature -1 °C.

Tonight:

Further occasionally heavy snow showers are expected, adding to the snow accumulations, with some clear spells likely. Very cold with a penetrating severe frost given the strength of the breeze. Minimum temperature -8 °C.

Thursday:

Another very cold day with a strong easterly wind giving a significant wind chill. Some sunny spells are expected but with further occasionally heavy snow showers. Maximum temperature -1 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Remaining cold with widespread frosts, however temperatures very gradually climbing. Easterly winds will continue to bring scattered snow showers, with more persistent snow possible at times on Sunday.

Here is my Dad opening up the farm road between Morpeth and Hepscott.  Only 8 miles from the coast and not high elevation.  It must be unreal further inland and higher up.  This was this morning, but he said it will be blocked again soon.

Your dad is a star. When you look at the size of the showers over that part you can see why.

Can definitely see the showers building back to the south out to sea.  Tyneside / Wearside (and then Consett of course) in the initial firing line

Yep, another very heavy shower just passed through, keeping the levels topped up just nicely!

Once the wind turns more Easterly will that favour the rest of the region too?

Hope so, but you never can be sure until the radar shows them incoming

Looking at the satellite images on SAT24, you can actually make out a distinct narrow band of more intense cloud that looks like a band or streamer headed in roughly the direction of the North East, poss Tyneside, maybe due in about an hour? Have a look, what do you think?
