Technically it wasn't a Polar Low but its characteristics were pretty similar..If the flow was Northerly it would certainly have been classed as a PL.

Here it was when it was just off the Norwegian coast.

Edit..

Got BBC News on and the weather presenter just said that the low last night was a Polar low..Maybe the definition should be modified..If certain climatologists are correct and climates are shifting it would make sense to change criteria.

Fair enough, hands up. Makes no odds really, it is just semantics I suppose. What matters is that it was a snowmaker, and it's cousin is coming round for tea this afternoon!

Places out of the way of the Sun no thaw at all, for example my side of the road has 3/4 inches the other side the path is starting to come through

Speaking ofnpolar lows, this is my only experience of one. 2005, it spring up out of nowhere and shot down the east coast. Dumped about 25cm in a couple of hours. I've had this picture of it saved ever since.

If anyone's interested on what the Met Office think what's going to happen they're having a live broadcast on twitter/Facebook.5a954dc68913c_ScreenShot2018-02-27at12_17_41.thumb.png.ea771b65793209c9a6194f80f85e76de.png

What time can we expect the fun and games to start today and this evening?

Hopefully by late afternoon we should see the convective showers beef up as even lower instability arrives.

In some ways it's ashame the flow will turn more ese'ly eventually but the North East should still do well enough I would of thought.

The radar is currently not updating due to data transmission issues at the met office until it is fixed we will have to resort to the old-fashioned looking out the window

Snow here now.  Intensity 7/10.  Not seen it past 8/10 yet, but my area has not been directly hit by one of the more intense showers yet.

We still have a pretty good covering here in Newcastle but there’s no doubting that a thaw has been an ongoing thaw prett much from the off this morning. Still, can’t complain for a late winter cold snap!

I think at this time of year snow melts really easily as the sun is stronger if it had been a month back i feel this cold spell would have been something to be excited about now its just a nuisance im ready for spring :D

Warning issued for Saturday

Between 00:05 Fri 2nd and 23:55 Sat 3rd

Snow showers are expected to continue over parts of northern Britain, bringing a further risk of ice and further accumulations of snow. Further delays to travel and public transport could occur, whilst some rural communities could become or remain cut off. Further impacts to power supplies/mobile phone coverage are also possible.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Frequent snow showers are likely to continue feeding in from the North Sea on a very cold easterly wind. Due to the nature of showers, some places are expected to receive an additional 5-10 cm of snow per day, whereas other places nearby may only receive small amounts. Brisk winds will lead to some drifting of snow, as well as a severe wind chill, although these are expected to begin to ease through Friday.
