What would you suggest is the best short range model for precipitation up here.

Let's see where we're at after the 12z's. We should get a decent idea between the UKMO/ECM/GFS and the short range models. Even if the feature does track south of us it's certainly not the defining feature of this spell for us.

Netweather radar as it’s incoming Monday afternoon:D

I nearly said that tbh. I'm just confused what is the best high res model to look at. Arpege for example has the North sea packed with snow from Tuesday morning onwards

Amber warning Issued for Wednesday

  • Darlington
  • Durham
  • Gateshead
  • Hartlepool
  • Middlesbrough
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • North Tyneside
  • Northumberland
  • Redcar and Cleveland
  • South Tyneside
  • Stockton-on-Tees
  • Sunderland

Between 04:00 Wed 28th and 21:00 Wed 28th

Heavy snow showers are expected on Wednesday. Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers. Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely. There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off. Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phones, may be affected.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

Snow showers will bring variable snow cover, but parts of northeast England and Scotland are expected to see the most frequent and, at times, organised snow showers. 5-10 cm of snow is expected quite widely with locally 10-20 cm possible. Strong winds will lead to drifting of snow and severe wind chill, while lightning could be an additional hazard, particularly near coasts.

Hi everybody,

looks like serious disruption is now incoming. I hope everyone can stay safe.  Just out of interest, where is the deep cold today, has it reached Amsterdam yet?  Could it be checking in on the last flight from Schipol in to DTV tonight?

I expect an amber warning being issued today if not then tomorrow for our region!

Snow update:

Tonight, the first sign of the snow showers arrives with the bitterly cold air just after midnight, this will form and band of snow showers reaching the east coast and heading inland... probably a few hours of snow showers giving a slight dusting in places.

Monday, scattered snow showers throughout the day these focused more first thing then again during the evening/overnight period... so possibly not too bad of a day but very cold.

Tuesday, we see the shallow low cross the south of the region during the early hours creating a band of persistent heavy snow which will give a good few cms for most, brief lul before the snow showers start piling in during the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday/thursday, likely the worst days for some really heavy frequent snow showers combined with strong winds leading to driftin snow and blizzard like condistions as the flow will be very unstable with many troughs passing west enhancing the showers to more prolonged spell of snow. (amber warning likely)

Friday/saturday, IF the low pushes as far north as shown then expect many hours of heavy snow/blizzards.

My thoughts on this weeks snow :cold::cold::cold:

As expected, warnings flying out of metoffice HQ.

Amber now for wednesday, all warnings highlight my earlier posts.

this week should be epic for us here in the North East - hopefully will see snow as deep as 2010 if not deeper - I leave the house at 6.15am for work &  I suspect there will be some really tricky driiving conditions to contend with - everybody enjoy the snow and drive carefully:cold:

Expect that to change for the Durham area. Our contingency forecaster thinks so. I will await an email later tonight from him.

Any chance of snow tonight?  Should we have a sweep?  Might need photographic evidence

Been looking at this today up in Medomsley, didn't go above 2.7 from what I could see, dropping steadily now, breeze picking up too

My weather station chose this week to give up the ghost. I bought a temporary max/min digital outdoor thermometer for this spell but it's a nightmare to locate as it won't fit in the screen I have for the now defunct station very well. I've jammed it up there so can hopefully still record my mins.

Hi all. Greeting from sunny Seghill in Northumberland ? I absolutely love snow and these mad weather events, but I don't understand all of the technical data ? Reading these pages is like a rollercoaster...one minute it's mega snow and chaos, then not sure, then it's moving South etc etc! I think ultimately the most reliable course of action is simply to look out of my window this week.
