Interesting listening to that BBC forecast.  He described it as a polar low - and seemed confident of it passing east of the pennines, causing a few headaches in the east midlands tomorrow.

Met office forecast has it passing over us.  Not seen two localish forecasts so different at this short timescale for a while .... first BBC vs UKMET battle anyone ?? one has to be wrong.

I would think we'll find out soon enough - it seems daft that the main UK free to air broadcaster and the met office both seem at odds with each other.  Will wait and see if theres any update to the warnings bacause at the moment even for this part of Lancs we are under 5-6 hrs of snow and that warrants at least a touch of the yellow crayon :D

ICON GIF not looking good for weekend.

Better chance of a blizzard on the South Coast :wallbash:

If it tracks north, the cold spell will end.

Snow to rain doesn't cut it for me. Besides, if it tracks north Greater Manchester will be in a rain shadow so not much use unless you live in an area that is not affected by the shadow effect.

If they are going to update the warning for tonight then it will be in the next hour.

Signs that some beefier showers may be beginning to push across from the East coast?

What track do polar lows generally take? Not seen one quite like this before.

I've only seen a couple and they have come down the west coast running direct N to S.  I do know they are difficult to pick up which is probably why there is still uncertainty about the track.  Someone who knows a bit more than me may be able to give you a better answer here ...

A polar low?

Polar lows don't have frontal systems attached with them as far I'm aware. Not convinced it's a polar low.

I think they are being a bit loose with the description but that is what it is being called. I guess they don’t know what else to call it

It’s not a polar low. 500 HPa temperatures arn’t cold enough yet. They are on Thursday though.  Don’t care what it is if it gives us some snow.
