Today has been bitter, wind has been consistently strong blowing snow about and making for significant wind chill. Lots of roads closed in and around Cumbria, now reports of fallen trees just to add the misery.

No quick return to mild for the foreseeable.

Snow getting heavier, starting to settle again.

Yeah giving up now, it gets to us looks like it's setting in then backs off. It looks like mid and south Wirral are doing well, they have been under darker blues and greens for a good few hours now.

One thing I hate about snow is there's no audible cue to its arrival so I have to waste effort going to look out the window to see if that dark blue radar return that's been over me for 3 hours now is actually a reality which it isn't

Not as good as it might first appear as it is not really settling properly as much of it was being blown away/subliminated, and some is even melting on certain surfaces like cars. Gone lighter now.

Must admit I was wondering where all the snow would come from to last all night and into tomorrow.  The radar still shows it mainly light and what was once a backedge now seems to be merging with the light snow to the south

The M62 is closed and is likely to remain closed. The other parallel routes are just as bad it not worse. “If you are trying to cross the Pennines - don’t. “And if you are currently queuing, do not try and pick another route across the Pennines. “Either go back the way you came or go to a service area, or find a hotel or a friend’s house.

“Do not try to continue your journey across the Pennines.” Highways England

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
