No mate we got pummelled in march 2013..i got pics of snowdrifts up to my knees ..

It was an easterly..which is what we need here..

I can well imagine it, those hills normally have well over a foot from what everyone else calls a "minor or non-event" in January anyway so a top off event in March could really do the trick. I was thinking at low levels (sub 300m), although goodness knows what that would do to the poor old man....

I think myself and the likes of Frost Hollow were a little bit more sheltered and lower down, because I remember it just has he describes, the heaviest precipitation and snowfall stayed to the west and south west i.e. Cheshire, Isle of Man, Cumbria.... the north eastern flank of the precipitation just crawled to a virtual stop and seemed to lose it's energy and barely give at dusting at my local level.  However the winds were vicious and I only had to go across into Abbey Hills/Lees Road and the fields beyond to see 4ft drifts.... it was a low pressure that came up from the south west and engaged bitter south easterly winds.... not a direct easterly from the continent that carried it's own convective snow showers and associated fronts.

March 2013 had quite a rain shadow for a lot of Greater Manchester. I actually missed most of it at home as I was in Manchester bone dry!

I managed to easily bury one of those 30cm/1ft rulers in Jan 2010 (had to dig out a yardstick to measure it, in the north east), so this is obviously the next logical goal! So what kind of synoptics are we looking at for over a metre of snow? Armageddon! that would be record breaking lol. 

I don’t know what set up would give us that amount of snow but 125mm of rain fell here in the hours leading up to the 2015 Boxing Day floods so using the standard conversion rate that would give us snow at least a metre deep.

That would certainly do the trick via standard conversion if it came in colder air than it did then.

I was told years ago that this part of the country had a massive fall in January 1940 which dumped almost 4 feet of level snow but whether it was a single event or topped up over time i’m not sure.

Not worth doing any kind of future forecast at the min, the models are all over the place the SSW is certainly causing huge swings in the output. Still think there is a high chance of Winter proper from the beginning of next week well into March, could be a slow burner to start with before it gets ever colder.
