Nice covering of hail across the ground here and looking on Radar out towards the Irish Sea there's more showers lined up for the evening. The predicted 'thundersnow' has been elusive so-far today with 3 hours remaining on the MAN METAR, unless it's extended further into tonight.

I believe SSW can cause a split in the polar vortex which can cause cold air to sink into Europe and possibly the UK.

So,... band of showers comes down from scotland and remains in tact untill IMBY, then dissipates before reforming once its left IMBY. What weather phenomena causes this?

It's the weather reporters version 2+2=5

Some SSW's have resulted in cold spells in the past, some have not, there's a chance that SSW could pass us a Greenland high or a straight Northerly/Easterly bringing in cold air. Basically there is a slightly increased likelihood of snow, and Netweather have ran with it for an express/TWO style article with a bit more scientific jargon thrown in.

Precip is gaining intensity as it hits land too, shower has stopped and left a dusting in places within 10 minutes. Only needs more of that tonight for an inch easily.

That shower sat between the isle of man and Cumbria/South Scotland is going to absolutely paste somewhere, looks like it might be heading down here but the winds supposed to change isn't it?

Meanwhile, a proper covering outside, and more snow falling. Viva la winter.
