Surely an Easterly would be even worse? Dying over the penines? You need a straight northerly then?

Not necessarily it depends on the strength of the wind or whether fronts push up against the block from the Southwest or even a Feb 91 style with a low pushing in from the continent. Honestly this is no normal setup occuring up there, from next weekend things 'could' get very very intetesting.

An hour ago it was flat calm and you could see stars. Then the wind got up, it started chucking it down with rain and now we’ve got heavy snow coming in sideways and settling fast.

Noticed a lightning strike North of Keswick. Probably an hour ago.

Wind dropped a bit. Trees near St Andrews cricket pitch were close to coming down earlier.

Just when I thought it had calmed the house cracked and creaked from a huge gust.

Sleet and haul now battering the window.

Still gusting here at a moderate 57mph, max gust has been 62mph. The models show the worst of the winds should clear away to the East by around 2am.

Radar showing more pink and green. Should wake to some flakes tomorrow and that won' be the crunchy nut variety either.

Hopefully lookslike showers building through the afternoon and maybe some heavy ones tomorrow evening/night.... radar watching and looking out the window I guess.... fingers crossed this has a lot better potential than the drab we’ve had so far this winter....

Yep.

My stepson has exams at Buxton college Tue thru Thur. Having seen the 21.55 News 24 forecst with Thomas Shavenackers, I think he could have problems with transport and snow.

ZZZ's for me now, post tomorrow hopefully with regards to plenty of the white stuff falling.

Remarkable weather this evening, at 11pm it was 5c and raining and I thought there goes another weather warning bust but then at midnight I looked out and was amazed to see a white landscape and heavy blowing snow with a temperature of 1c!

Still snowing hard and just had a flash of lightning to the west.

Bloody great!

Andy

Hopefully not too many problems... fingers crossed.... if not I’m sure Buxton college have to take it into consideration as a lot of pupils come from Glossop and further afield than Buxton....

  • Chilly with an increasing risk of frost

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
