You should be OK with a 4x4, and the intensity will be such that gritters / ploughs will be able to cope on major roads.

Two further points....

Check that the flight leaves on time (if poss and not time constrained)

GP - Getting back he may have to consider drifting.

The winds are still gusting to 20kmh  and it is still blowing widely off the fields. An extra 5 cms will make it much worse.

Temps rising faster than expected here, forecast high was -2 but up to -0.5c here.

Got to -0.4C here, but it has dropped in the last 10mis to -0.6C again.

I suspect that the brighter skies have influenced it a bit.

I think that in snow it will fall back to about -1,0C again.

Yep... Always a nightmare as it rarely gets gritted. I had to leave the village via Patshull and Burnhill Green

I drove through there at 10am yesterday as I work at Patshull and live in Codsall. It was starting to drift over the road then.

yeah that's what I,m thinking, East mids to Peak District, The car is a panda 4x4 so its fine in snow.

probably pack a couple of shovels. Flights coming in from Tenerife leaves at 2.30pm, so should know if its arriving, just don't want it diverting to Manchester or something silly like that.

thought about waiting till its landed, ask family to have coffee at airport and i will be there in a couple of hours, but then snow could be worse by midnight, what with less traffic on roads, although sometimes that's not to bad, less cars around so 4x4 can more easily navigate roads  :)

Yeah as @weirpig just said 06z GFS is already rolling out and has it over us for a while. It looks good, goes right from SW midlands up through to the very NE of midlands. GFS accumulations of 5 to 8cm by late Friday night. 2 or 3cm by rush hour, roads will be awful.

Hmmm not much from that band further south so far!!needs to pick up intensity rapid!!

Snow seems to be moving up according t the net weather radar. Lets hope for decent covering but i feel this strong wind will put pay to that

The band is supposed to pull together and organise as it comes north. Anyone thinking it's going to be Armageddon with Orange on radar is badly mistaken, it's a weak affair with patches of heavier stuff - you just need to hit the jack pot there. I'm hoping it comes later, when it's dark. That way it's going to stick. There's a thaw going on as we speak - if it falls this afternoon in daylight there's no chance of accumulation. We need that wind to slow down or else it will be a repeat of yesterday.

Not expecting much here, south of Birmingham again today.

You're right about the weak affair part, but I don't think it's the case about the wind. If you go to a ski resort in the alps, it is pretty much windy all the time, exceptionally so higher up mountains. 70 to 120mph winds high up on a very frequent basis. But, the snow still settles. Sure there are massive drifts, but it can't blow away into space and vanish. It has to settle somewhere, no matter what the wind is like.

FWIW:

To everyone commenting that the ppn in the south is weak, well yes it is. But it is supposed to merge with more ppn from the channel later in the day, and therefor intensify somewhat.

That weather warning that is expected to affect the West Mids is forecast to reach northern england by this evening, if so, it had better get a shift on.
